Singapore is preparing to auction more than 80 properties and over 1,000 luxury items starting next month, as part of the liquidation of assets seized by authorities in the largest money laundering case the country has ever seen, estimated to be worth around 3 billion Singapore dollars.
Deloitte in Singapore stated, according to Bloomberg, that the assets will be sold in phases extending from next September until mid-2027, although the final number of assets to be included in each auction phase has not yet been determined.
The list of offerings includes properties located in upscale areas, along with a wide range of luxury collectibles, including jewelry, watches, and handbags, in one of the largest sales of seized assets in Singapore's history.
Deloitte's unit in Singapore has taken charge of overseeing the liquidation of the seized assets after being appointed for this task last year, while authorities have already begun selling some of the seized properties and assets, including cars and residential and commercial real estate.
The assets are linked to a massive money laundering case uncovered by Singaporean authorities in 2023, estimated to be worth around 3 billion Singapore dollars, equivalent to about 2.4 billion US dollars, involving individuals from Fujian province in southern China.
In August 2023, Singaporean authorities carried out a series of extensive raids targeting a network of individuals accused of laundering proceeds from criminal activities, resulting in the arrest of several suspects and the seizure of substantial assets, including properties, cars, jewelry, watches, cash, and other financial assets.
According to reports, members of the network had used companies and family offices to manage their funds and spent large amounts on real estate and luxury collectibles, while some lived lavish lifestyles in Singapore before being brought down by the authorities' campaign.
The authorities seized more than 200 properties in connection with the case, many of which are located in upscale neighborhoods, and later began the process of recovering the value of these assets through their sale and liquidation of the seized properties.
The new auctions come as part of Singapore's efforts to convert the seized assets into funds for the state, following one of the largest anti-money laundering operations in the Asian financial hub.
Luxury properties and collectibles are expected to attract significant interest from investors and buyers, especially since some of the seized properties are located in high-value areas, while the watches, jewelry, and luxury handbags represent part of the assets purchased by the network with the funds under investigation.
