أثار بابا الفاتيكان البابا ليو الرابع عشر صدمة بين المحافظين الكاثوليك بعد انتقاده الحاد لسياسات الهجرة الصارمة للرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، مشككاً في توافقها مع تعاليم الكنيسة حول حماية الحياة.
انتهاء فترة العسل الجديد
جاء هذا التعليق في مقابلة مع الصحفيين، مما أنهى «فترة العسل الجديد» التي استمتع بها ليو مع اليمين المحافظ بعد انتخابه في مايو الماضي، وذلك وفقاً لوسائل إعلام أمريكية.
ليو، الذي ولد في شيكاغو وأمضى معظم مسيرته في بيرو، قال للصحفيين خارج مقر إقامته في كاستل غاندولفو: «من يقول إنني ضد الإجهاض لكنه يوافق على المعاملة اللاإنسانية للمهاجرين في الولايات المتحدة، لا أعرف إن كان ذلك مؤيداً للحياة حقاً».
وأضاف في سياق نقاش حول جائزة كاثوليكية للسيناتور الديمقراطي ديك دوربين، الذي يدعم حقوق الإجهاض، أنه «يجب النظر في العمل الشامل للسيناتور على مدى أكثر من 40 عاماً في الكونغرس».
انتقادات وردود فعل رسمية
أثار تعليق بابا الفاتيكان غضباً فورياً بين المحافظين الذين سبق أن أشادوا بـ«ليو» لتجنبه القضايا الاجتماعية المثيرة للجدل، مثل الإجهاض والزواج المثلي، وإعادته بعض التقاليد مثل ارتداء الـ«موزيتا» الحمراء التقليدية في أول ظهور عام له، وهو ما رفضه فرانسيس.
الأسقف السابق في تكساس جوزيف ستريكلاند، الذي أُقْصِيَ من منصبه من قبل فرانسيس لكنه أشاد بليو سابقاً، انتقد البابا الجديد على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي لإثارة «الكثير من الالتباس حول قدسية الحياة الإنسانية ووضوح التعليم الأخلاقي للكنيسة».
من جانبها، نفت المتحدثة باسم البيت الأبيض كارولين ليفتت وصف معاملة المهاجرين بأنها «لا إنسانية»، مؤكدة أن ترمب «يوفي بوعده للشعب الأمريكي بترحيل المهاجرين غير الشرعيين الإجراميين».
ليس بالهجوم الوحيد
يأتي هذا في سياق تصريحات ليو الأخرى، إذ دعا في خطاب ألقاه (الأربعاء) في مؤتمر حول تغير المناخ إلى «الوحدة في مواجهة التحديات البيئية»، مشيراً إلى تحديث فرانسيس لعقيدة «لاوداتو سي» في 2023، وانتقد «السخرية من علامات الاحتباس الحراري العالمي».
وأكدت إليز ألين، كاتبة سيرة ليو الصادرة عن «بينغوين بيرو» والصحفية الوحيدة التي أجرت مقابلة معه منذ انتخابه، أن «ليو سيُثِيرُ ريش المحافظين الأمريكيين في بعض الأحيان، ولا يجب أن يفاجئهم ذلك»، مشيرة إلى أن خلفيته في بيرو جعلته يهتم بقضايا المهاجرين الاجتماعية، دون تجاهل أولوية الإجهاض.
«ليو» أول أمريكي للكرسي البابوي
انتُخِبَ ليو في 8 مايو 2025، بعد وفاة فرانسيس في 21 أبريل، كأول أمريكي يتولى الكرسي البابوي في تاريخ الكنيسة البالغ 2000 عام، وأشاد به الرئيس ترمب كـ«شرف كبير لأمريكا»، وهنأه الرئيس السابق جو بايدن على «إكس».

The End of the New Honeymoon Period
This comment came during an interview with journalists, marking the end of the "new honeymoon period" that Leo enjoyed with the conservative right following his election last May, according to American media.
Leo, who was born in Chicago and spent most of his career in Peru, told reporters outside his residence in Castel Gandolfo: "Anyone who says they are against abortion but agrees with the inhumane treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don't know if that is truly pro-life."
He added in the context of a discussion about a Catholic award for Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, who supports abortion rights, that "the senator's comprehensive work over more than 40 years in Congress should be considered."
Criticism and Official Reactions
The Pope's comment sparked immediate outrage among conservatives who had previously praised "Leo" for avoiding controversial social issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage, and for reviving some traditions, like wearing the traditional red "mozetta" during his first public appearance, which Francis had rejected.
Former Texas Bishop Joseph Strickland, who was removed from his position by Francis but had previously praised Leo, criticized the new pope on social media for creating "a lot of confusion about the sanctity of human life and the clarity of the Church's moral teaching."
For her part, White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt denied describing the treatment of immigrants as "inhumane," asserting that Trump "is fulfilling his promise to the American people to deport criminal illegal immigrants."
Not the Only Attack
This comes in the context of Leo's other statements, as he called in a speech delivered (on Wednesday) at a climate change conference for "unity in facing environmental challenges," referring to Francis's update of the "Laudato Si" doctrine in 2023, and criticized "mocking the signs of global warming."
Elise Allen, the biographer of Leo published by "Penguin Peru" and the only journalist to have interviewed him since his election, confirmed that "Leo will occasionally ruffle the feathers of American conservatives, and they shouldn't be surprised by that," noting that his background in Peru has made him concerned about social issues related to immigrants, without neglecting the priority of abortion.
