ويأتي هذا الانتشار ضمن سلسلة تهديدات الرئيس دونالد ترمب بإرسال الحرس الوطني إلى مدن يقودها ديمقراطيون، مثل شيكاغو، لمواجهة الجريمة، كما فعل في لوس أنجلوس ووعد به في بورتلاند بولاية أوريغون.
رفض والي إلينوي
فيما أدان بريتزكر خطط الانتشار خلال مؤتمر صحفي عقده في شيكاغو، مشيرًا إلى مذكرة من وزارة الأمن الداخلي تؤكد الحاجة إلى القوات لحماية مرافق الهجرة والجمارك (ICE) خلال فترة تصاعد الاعتقالات الاتحادية للمهاجرين في منطقة شيكاغو.
ولم يعلق مسؤولو الوزارة على طلب التعليق، فيما قال بريتزكر: «ما كنت أحذر منه أصبح الآن واقعًا. الشيء الواضح الوحيد هو أن ما يفعله الرئيس ترمب لا يجعل إلينوي أكثر أمانًا».
حملات ضد الهجرة غير الشرعية

كما أعرب بريتزكر وعميد المدينة براندون جونسون عن مخاوفهما من أن هذه الخطوة غير دستورية وتُشكل تدخلًا سياسيًا يهدف إلى إثارة التوترات، مشددين على أن الولاية ستتحدى الإجراء قانونيًا إذا تم تنفيذه، كما حذر الوالي من أن مثل هذه التحركات قد تؤدي إلى تصعيد الاحتجاجات وتقلل من الثقة في السلطات الفيدرالية.
