On a working visit, his first to Sudan since assuming his position, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil Fahmy, arrived in Khartoum on (Monday) to discuss the developments of the situation and ways to support the dialogue process.
The Arab League stated in a statement that the visit comes within the framework of "the Arab League's solidarity with Sudan, its state, and its people during this critical time," affirming its support for Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at ending the war and alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Fahmy was received in Khartoum by Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohiuddin Salim and several government officials.
During the visit, Fahmy will meet with the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the Prime Minister, Kamel Idris, in addition to meeting with the Sudanese Dialogue Preparation Committee and several representatives of political forces to discuss "the developments of the situation in Sudan, ways to support the comprehensive Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue process, and the role of the Arab League in the upcoming phase."
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry stated that the visit to Khartoum aims to enhance communication and consultation between Sudan and the Arab League, and to discuss issues of mutual interest in light of the current developments in the country and the Arab region. It added that the visit will address ways to enhance the role of the Arab League in supporting Sudan and discuss the latest developments in the country, as well as efforts aimed at achieving security and stability and preserving Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The Secretary-General of the Arab League's visit to Khartoum is expected to last two days.
Fahmy had previously confirmed that the Sudanese crisis was among the priorities of his discussions during his participation in the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, with leaders of countries, senior officials, and foreign ministers of several international and regional powers.
He pointed to the necessity of creating the conditions required to ensure the safe and sustainable return of refugees and displaced persons to their areas in Sudan, and to work on enhancing the capacity of Sudanese state institutions to deal with the wide-ranging consequences of the war.
The Secretary-General met with Masad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for Arab and African Affairs, last September on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
He emphasized the importance of intensifying international efforts to reach a humanitarian truce that leads to a permanent ceasefire in Sudan and ensures the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, stressing the necessity of preserving Sudan's unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions.
