U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson questioned the results of opinion polls and election forecasts that predict a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections scheduled for November 3.
Republicans are enthusiastic
In a television interview yesterday (Sunday), he stated that the enthusiasm he sensed among Republicans during their campaigns indicates a stronger performance for his party than what the polls reflect.
He pointed out that the opinion polls underestimate the support for Republicans and rely on inaccurate analyses, in objection to the network's predictions that suggested Democrats would gain a majority of the seats. He added, "I tell you these polls are wrong, all of them. They rely on flawed analyses."
Johnson reported that he has visited 21 states and 39 congressional districts over the past three weeks, including districts controlled by Democrats that Republicans are seeking to take from them.
He noted that the enthusiasm he observed at campaign events resembles the atmosphere leading up to the 2024 elections, pointing out that only a few attendees at the rallies he participated in reported that they had taken part in opinion polls.
A choice between two approaches
Johnson's remarks came at a time when the program presented a classification of electoral seats, placing 219 seats in the category likely to be won by Democrats, compared to 198 seats for Republicans, while classifying 18 seats as being closely contested. Any party needs 218 seats to secure a majority in the House.
Johnson considered that Republicans will approach the elections relying on their legislative record, presenting the competition as a choice between two different approaches to border security, energy, public safety, and the economy. He added, "It’s an election I would describe as a confrontation between reason and madness."
On the occasion of the three-year anniversary of his election as House Speaker, Johnson stated that he has raised $860 million to support Republicans in the House during his tenure, affirming that he will continue his campaign tours until Election Day.
The cost of living problem
He attributed what he described as his party's achievements to policies he said contributed to tightening border security, reducing taxes and government spending, cutting regulatory burdens, and encouraging domestic manufacturing. He also mentioned investment accounts for newborns and a national school choice program among what he considered Republican achievements.
Regarding the ongoing concerns of voters about the economy, Johnson blamed negative media coverage but acknowledged that the cost of living remains a problem for American families.
He confirmed that gasoline prices are higher than they should be, and we recognize that. "Of course, we still have more work to do." He emphasized the need for voters to look at the candidate who can best serve their families, adding that Republicans need more time to implement their policies and achieve their goals.
