The Iraqi judiciary ordered today, Monday, the arrest of the head of the Maysan Provincial Council, Mustafa Da'ir, for threatening civil disobedience if a border crossing with Iran is not opened.
Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaydi directed an investigation into the head of the Maysan Provincial Council, following statements in which he hinted at declaring civil disobedience if the government did not respond to the demand to reopen the Shib border crossing with Iran.
Al-Zaydi emphasized the necessity of adhering to the law and following constitutional and administrative procedures in dealing with service and administrative files, while leaving the assessment of the legal responsibility resulting from the statements to the relevant authorities.
Da'ir had called for the reopening of the crossing and gave the government a deadline ending Thursday, warning of escalating protests and roadblocks in the province if there was no response.
Dozens of protesters blocked the vital Bazrkan road leading to oil companies in Maysan, chanting slogans demanding the reversal of the closure decision, amid a heavy security presence around the protest site, according to the Iraqi news agency "Shafaq News."
The markets in the province witnessed a sharp rise in the prices of vegetables and fruits following the decision, prompting citizens to call via social media platforms for the reopening of the crossing and the resumption of commercial movement.
The Iraqi government had closed the Shib crossing until further notice, attributing the decision to the crossing's lack of technical, technical, and developmental readiness, according to the Iraqi News Agency.
Al-Aboudi clarified that halting operations at the crossing represents a step towards enhancing its technical and logistical readiness, noting that more than one other border crossing is experiencing smooth trade exchange with Iran.
