The Japan Meteorological Agency raised the volcanic alert level for Mount "Tokachi" on the northern island of Hokkaido today (Saturday) from level two to level three out of five, warning of a possible eruption that could affect areas within approximately 3 kilometers of the volcano's crater.
This is the first level three warning issued regarding Mount "Tokachi," which stands at about 2,077 meters high, while authorities urged people to stay away from the areas surrounding the crater in anticipation of increased volcanic activity.
Increased Earthquakes
The regional office of the Japan Meteorological Agency in Sapporo reported that the frequency of strong earthquakes near the volcano has increased since August, prompting authorities to raise the alert level, with growing indications of potential volcanic activity.
Authorities also warned residents of the towns of Furano, Biei, Kamifurano, Minamifurano, and Shintoku about the possibility of volcanic ash falling and small volcanic rocks scattering in the event of an eruption.
Evacuations Near the Crater
In the town of Kamifurano, authorities issued an evacuation order for the "Fukiyagi" hot spring area, located about 3 kilometers from the crater, and requested that elderly residents leave the area. They also temporarily closed the "Hakugin-so" accommodation facility in the same area.
The "Ryounkaku" hotel in the Tokachidake hot spring area remains open, but it has advised elderly guests to evacuate in anticipation of increased volcanic activity.
Signs of Increased Activity
These measures come amid signs of increasing volcanic activity at Mount "Tokachi," as there has been a rise in volcanic gas emissions since April, followed by small eruptions in July and August.
The last major recorded volcanic eruption of the mountain was in February 2004.
Japan's volcanic warning system is based on five levels, starting with warnings and necessary precautions in populated areas, escalating to restrictions on access to danger zones and then evacuations at higher levels.
