The Iraqi authorities discovered today (Saturday) launch platforms for drones near the border with Iran, which were used to carry out attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, coinciding with the dismissal of the commander of operations in Maysan province and the referral of several security officials for investigation, following security breaches that raised questions about Baghdad's ability to control its borders and prevent their use for carrying out attacks outside the country.
Two Iraqi security sources reported that the forces found the drone launch platforms in the remote Al-Tayeb area of southern Maysan province, near the Iranian border, while Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falah Al-Zaydi directed the formation of an investigative council regarding the operations command of the province, relieving the operations commander and appointing Major General Ali Abdul-Hussein Kazem, in addition to referring the directors of security agencies for investigation.
The Iraqi military media cell announced the start of legal procedures and security and administrative arrangements at several border crossings with Iran, coinciding with intensified intelligence work and scrutiny to uncover the circumstances of the breaches and take necessary actions.
It clarified that the Zurbatiyah and Al-Mundhiriyah crossings remain open for passenger movement, while the authorities closed the Shalamcheh, Al-Shayb, and Mandali crossings with Iran, following the attacks that targeted the Saudi oil pipeline "East-West."
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Haibat Al-Halbousi, announced his rejection of using his country's territory as a platform for attacks on neighboring countries, emphasizing the importance of restricting weapons to the state. Iraqi President Nizar Amidi also affirmed his support for the government's measures to pursue those involved in the attacks that targeted Saudi Arabia and expressed his condemnation of the attack.
The Iraqi actions come after Saudi Arabia announced the suspension of operations on the oil pipeline transporting oil from the Eastern Province to the western coasts, following attacks by drones originating from Iraq, while Baghdad agreed to allow Iran to participate in the investigation regarding the launch platforms found near the border.
