The Sudanese army achieved new progress today (Saturday) in the Kermuk area of the Blue Nile state, coinciding with ongoing confrontations with the Rapid Support Forces in the Qaisan and Kermuk areas.
The field developments come after the army announced on Thursday that it had intercepted drones launched by the Rapid Support Forces towards the capital, Khartoum, with one of the drones crashing into a house in Omdurman, resulting in the injury of eight people, according to a medical source at Al-No Hospital.
A military source told Agence France-Presse that the air defenses dealt with the drones that attempted to target areas north of Omdurman, confirming their interception and preventing them from reaching their targets.
The army had established control over Khartoum after expelling the Rapid Support Forces from it in March 2025, following a large-scale military operation; however, the latter continues to carry out drone attacks on the capital from time to time. Despite this, Khartoum has witnessed a gradual return to life, with about 2.3 million displaced people returning and the commencement of reconstruction efforts and the resumption of market activities.
In North Darfur, the Furuk Emergency Room in the Kutum locality issued an urgent distress call after detecting suspected cases of visceral leishmaniasis, known as "kala-azar," amid fears of the disease spreading, especially among children.
The room stated that the area is experiencing a significant increase in the sand fly, which transmits the disease, coinciding with the deterioration of environmental conditions, a shortage of clean water and spraying services, and the collapse of health services due to the war.
Health authorities and humanitarian organizations have called for urgent action to enhance epidemiological surveillance, provide testing and medications, and implement campaigns to combat disease vectors, warning that displaced children and residents of remote areas are at greater risk.
These developments come amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Darfur, with ongoing displacement and shortages of food, water, and health services, while local estimates indicate that around 6,200 children are suffering from malnutrition, including 1,500 cases of severe acute malnutrition.
