أكدت السلطات في جزر المالديف العثور على جثث أربعة غواصين إيطاليين كانوا قد فُقدوا إثر حادثة غوص الأسبوع الماضي، في واحدة من أسوأ كوارث الغوص التي شهدتها الدولة الواقعة في المحيط الهندي.
وبحسب شبكة BBC، جاء الإعلان بعد أن كانت فرق الإنقاذ قد عثرت بالفعل على جثة الضحية الخامسة من المجموعة عقب الحادثة مباشرة يوم الخميس الماضي.
وأوضحت السلطات المحلية أن الجثث الأربع عُثر عليها داخل كهف تحت الماء على عمق نحو 60 متراً في منطقة فافو أتول، وذلك بواسطة فريق مشترك من غواصين محترفين من المالديف وفنلندا.
وفي تطور مأساوي آخر، لقي أحد غواصي الإنقاذ مصرعه، السبت، أثناء مشاركته في عمليات البحث عن الضحايا.
وقال المتحدث باسم الحكومة في المالديف محمد حسين شريف إن عمليات غوص إضافية ستُنفذ خلال الأيام القادمة بهدف انتشال الجثث من الكهف البحري.
ويُعتقد أن الحادثة تمثل أسوأ مأساة غوص فردية في تاريخ المالديف، التي تُعد من أبرز الوجهات السياحية العالمية بفضل جزرها المرجانية ومواقع الغوص الشهيرة.
الضحايا من فريق أكاديمي إيطالي
وضمت المجموعة الإيطالية أربعة أعضاء من فريق تابع لجامعة جنوة الإيطالية، وهم البروفيسورة مونيكا مونتيفالكوني، وابنتها جورجيا سوماكال، والباحثان مورييل أودينينو وفيديريكو غوالتييري.
أما الضحية الخامسة فهو جيانلوكا بينيديتي، مدير عمليات القارب ومدرب الغوص.
كما أعلنت السلطات وفاة غواص الإنقاذ المالديفي الرقيب محمد مهدي، الذي كان ضمن فريق مكوّن من ثمانية غواصين شاركوا في عملية البحث عن المفقودين.
وأوضح المتحدث الحكومي أن الفريق أدرك بعد صعوده إلى السطح أن مهدي لم يخرج من المياه، ما دفع الغواصين الآخرين إلى العودة سريعاً للبحث عنه، قبل العثور عليه فاقداً للوعي.
وتشير التقديرات إلى أن الجثث الأربع كانت موجودة داخل الكهف نفسه الذي عثرت فيه القوات العسكرية على الجثة الأولى يوم وقوع الحادثة.
The authorities in the Maldives have confirmed the discovery of the bodies of four Italian divers who went missing following a diving incident last week, in one of the worst diving disasters the Indian Ocean nation has experienced.
According to the BBC, the announcement came after rescue teams had already found the body of the fifth victim from the group shortly after the incident last Thursday.
The local authorities explained that the four bodies were found inside an underwater cave at a depth of about 60 meters in the Faafu Atoll, by a joint team of professional divers from the Maldives and Finland.
In another tragic development, one of the rescue divers was killed on Saturday while participating in the search operations for the victims.
The government spokesperson in the Maldives, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, stated that additional diving operations will be carried out in the coming days to retrieve the bodies from the underwater cave.
The incident is believed to represent the worst individual diving tragedy in the history of the Maldives, which is considered one of the world's premier tourist destinations due to its coral islands and famous diving sites.
The victims were from an Italian academic team
The Italian group included four members from a team affiliated with the University of Genoa, namely Professor Monica Montifalconi, her daughter Georgia Sumacal, and researchers Muriel Odedino and Federico Gualtieri.
The fifth victim was Gianluca Benedetti, the boat operations manager and diving instructor.
The authorities also announced the death of Maldivian rescue diver Sergeant Mohamed Mahdi, who was part of a team of eight divers involved in the search for the missing.
The government spokesperson clarified that the team realized after surfacing that Mahdi had not come out of the water, prompting the other divers to quickly return to search for him, before finding him unconscious.
Estimates suggest that the four bodies were located inside the same cave where military forces found the first body on the day of the incident.
