في خطوة غير تقليدية لمكافحة تلوث الهواء، أطلقت بلدية بريندولا (Brendola)، وهي بلدة صغيرة في مقاطعة فيتشنزا شمال إيطاليا، حملةلتوظيف فريق من «مقيّمي الروائح» في إطار مساعيها لتحسين جودة الهواء، بعد تزايد شكاوى السكان من انبعاث روائح كريهة في بعض الأحياء القريبة من المناطق الصناعية.
وأعلن عمدة البلدة برونو بيلترامي أن الحملة جاءت استجابة لشكاوى متكررة من سكان الأحياء القريبة من المناطق الصناعية، حيث يعانون من روائح غير مستساغة تنبعث من المصانع أو النفايات الصناعية أو مياه الصرف الصحي، مشيرًا إلى أن الهدف هو تحديد مصدر الروائح غير المرغوب فيها بدقة.
شروط خاصة ومهمة ميدانية
وبحسب صحيفة الغارديان، تشترط الوظيفة مدفوعة الأجر ألا يعاني المتقدم من حساسية أو أمراض تنفسية مثل الربو، وأن يمتلك سيارة وهاتفًا ذكيًا لاستخدام تطبيق مخصص لتسجيل البيانات المتعلقة بالروائح.
كما سيخضع المقبولون لتدريب بإشراف شركة متخصصة في قياس الروائح، لتعلم كيفية التمييز بين أنواع الانبعاثات المختلفة، سواء كانت صادرة عن مصانع، أو ناتجة عن نفايات صناعية أو شبكات الصرف الصحي.
وبعد التدريب، سيُطلب منهم التوجه إلى مناطق محددة لإجراء تقييمات حسية ميدانية، وفي حال رصد رائحة مزعجة، سيقومون بتوثيق ملاحظاتهم عبر التطبيق بعد مراقبة الهواء لفترة زمنية محددة.
تجربة سابقة وتوسيع نطاق التحقيق
وأوضح بيلترامي أن البلدية أجرت تحقيقًا مشابهًا قبل نحو 5 سنوات في منطقة صناعية قريبة، وتمكنت آنذاك من تحديد الشركات المسؤولة عن الانبعاثات.
وأضاف: «نوسّع اليوم النطاق الجغرافي للتحقق مما إذا كانت الشركات ذاتها قد استأنفت إطلاق الروائح، أم أن هناك مصادر جديدة».
تحديات وادي بو
وتقع مقاطعة فيتشنزا ضمن نطاق وادي بو Po Valley، إحدى أكثر المناطق الأوروبية تضررًا من تلوث الهواء، التي تمتد عبر أقاليم فينيتو وبييمونتي ولومبارديا وإميليا-رومانيا.
وأشار العمدة إلى أن المنطقة تُعد من أكثر المناطق إنتاجية في البلاد، لكنها في الوقت نفسه عرضة لمستويات مرتفعة من التلوث، مؤكدًا وجود بروتوكولات رقابية صارمة، مع فرض غرامات كبيرة على الشركات المخالفة.
وعي بيئي متزايد
ويبلغ عدد سكان بريندولا نحو 4 آلاف نسمة، وقد أبدى كثير منهم خلال السنوات الأخيرة اهتمامًا أكبر بحماية بيئتهم المحلية.
وقال بيلترامي: «أصبح السكان أكثر حرصًا على جودة حياتهم. عندما يشمون رائحة كريهة أو يرصدون نفايات متروكة يبادرون بالإبلاغ عنها، ما يتيح لنا التدخل سريعًا لتفادي مشكلات أكبر».
وكان الإعلان عن الوظائف قد نُشر لأول مرة قبل عيد الميلاد دون تلقي طلبات، إلا أن إعادة نشره عبر فيسبوك هذا الأسبوع أسفرت عن نحو 12 طلبًا، معظمها من طلاب جامعيين أبدوا حماسًا للمشاركة في المبادرة.
ومن المتوقع أن تستمر المهمة 6 أشهر، في خطوة تأمل السلطات المحلية أن تسهم في تحسين جودة الهواء وتعزيز الرقابة البيئية في المنطقة.
In an unconventional step to combat air pollution, the municipality of Brendola, a small town in the province of Vicenza in northern Italy, has launched a campaign to hire a team of "odor assessors" as part of its efforts to improve air quality, following an increase in complaints from residents about unpleasant odors in some neighborhoods near industrial areas.
The town's mayor, Bruno Beltrami, announced that the campaign was in response to repeated complaints from residents of neighborhoods close to industrial areas, where they suffer from unpleasant odors emanating from factories, industrial waste, or sewage, noting that the goal is to accurately identify the source of the unwanted odors.
Special Conditions and Field Duties
According to The Guardian, the paid position requires that applicants do not suffer from allergies or respiratory diseases such as asthma, and that they possess a car and a smartphone to use a dedicated app for recording data related to odors.
Accepted candidates will undergo training under the supervision of a company specialized in odor measurement, to learn how to distinguish between different types of emissions, whether they come from factories, industrial waste, or sewage systems.
After training, they will be asked to go to specific areas to conduct sensory field assessments, and if they detect an unpleasant odor, they will document their observations via the app after monitoring the air for a specified period.
Previous Experience and Expanding the Investigation
Beltrami explained that the municipality conducted a similar investigation about 5 years ago in a nearby industrial area, and at that time, they were able to identify the companies responsible for the emissions.
He added, "Today we are expanding the geographical scope to check whether the same companies have resumed releasing odors, or if there are new sources."
Challenges of the Po Valley
The province of Vicenza is located within the Po Valley, one of the most polluted areas in Europe, which spans the regions of Veneto, Piedmont, Lombardy, and Emilia-Romagna.
The mayor pointed out that the area is among the most productive in the country, but at the same time is prone to high levels of pollution, emphasizing that strict monitoring protocols are in place, with significant fines imposed on violating companies.
Increased Environmental Awareness
Brendola has a population of about 4,000 residents, many of whom have shown increased interest in protecting their local environment in recent years.
Beltrami said, "Residents have become more vigilant about their quality of life. When they smell an unpleasant odor or spot abandoned waste, they promptly report it, allowing us to intervene quickly to avoid bigger problems."
The job announcement was first published before Christmas without receiving any applications, but reposting it on Facebook this week resulted in about 12 applications, mostly from university students eager to participate in the initiative.
The mission is expected to last 6 months, in a step that local authorities hope will contribute to improving air quality and enhancing environmental monitoring in the region.
