أصدرت المحكمة العليا في تايوان الجمعة الماضية 20 يونيو حكمًا في واحدة من أغرب القضايا.
وتعود تفاصيل القضية إلى شاب، يُدعى تشانغ، أثار صدمة واسعة على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، بعد محاولته خداع 5 شركات تأمين عبر تعريض قدميه للثلج الجاف لمدة 10 ساعات، مما أدى إلى بترهما.
وحسبما أفادت صحيفة South China Morning Post، فإن تشانغ، وهو طالب جامعي في تايبيه، اشترى بين عامي 2005 ويناير 2023 عدة وثائق تأمين من 5 شركات، تشمل التأمين الصحي، والحياة، والحوادث، والرعاية طويلة الأمد، والتأمين على السفر.
وفي عام 2023، تواطأ تشانغ مع زميله السابق في المدرسة الثانوية، لياو، لتنفيذ خطة احتيالية، في 26 يناير، اشتريا الثلج الجاف من مدينة نيو تايبيه، وتوجها إلى منزل لياو في منطقة تشونغشان بتايبيه، وهناك وضع تشانغ قدميه العاريتين في دلو مملوء بالثلج الجاف، بينما قيّده لياو إلى كرسي بشرائط بلاستيكية لمنعه من التراجع إذا أصبح الألم لا يُطاق.
استمر تشانغ في هذا الوضع من الساعة الثانية فجرًا حتى الظهر، أي لمدة 10 ساعات، بينما وثّق لياو العملية بالصور والفيديوهات.
بعد يومين، توجه تشانغ إلى قسم الطوارئ في مستشفى ماكاي التذكاري، حيث تم تشخيصه بإصابات خطيرة تشمل قضمة صقيع من الدرجة الرابعة، ونخر في العظام، والتسمم الدموي، وتحلل عضلي، ونتيجة لذلك، اضطر الأطباء بتر قدميه.
وحاول الثنائي خداع شركات التأمين بدعوى أن تشانغ كان يقود دراجة نارية ليلًا عندما شعر فجأة بالبرد الشديد في ساقيه، مما تسبب في القضمة الصقيعية، ثم تقدموا بمطالبات بقيمة 41.26 مليون دولار تايواني (1.4 مليون دولار أمريكي) عبر ثماني وثائق تأمين.
ونجحت إحدى الشركات في دفع 236,427 دولارا تايوانيا، لكن الشركات الأربع الأخرى اكتشفت تناقضات ورفضت المطالبات.
لاحقًا، أبلغت جميع الشركات الشرطة، مما أدى إلى توجيه الادعاء العام تهم الاحتيال والمساعدة في إيذاء النفس العمدي إلى الثنائي.
في 20 يونيو الجاري، أصدرت المحكمة العليا في تايوان حكمًا بسجن تشانغ لمدة عامين مع وقف التنفيذ، بينما حُكم على لياو، الذي اعتُبر العقل المدبر، بالسجن ست سنوات.
وأشارت المحكمة إلى أن لياو خطط للمخطط، بينما عانى تشانغ من ألم شديد وتوصل إلى تسويات مع بعض الشركات، على عكس لياو الذي لم يتوصل إلى أي تسوية.
وأثار الحادث موجة من الصدمة عبر وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، حيث علق أحد المستخدمين قائلًا: هذا مدفوع بالطمع المحض. وأضاف آخر: خسارة كاملة، لا مال ولا قدمين، وسيقضي بقية حياته على كرسي متحرك بسبب فكرة سخيفة.
The Supreme Court in Taiwan issued a ruling last Friday, June 20, in one of the strangest cases.
The details of the case involve a young man named Chang, who caused widespread shock on social media after attempting to defraud five insurance companies by exposing his feet to dry ice for 10 hours, resulting in their amputation.
According to the South China Morning Post, Chang, a university student in Taipei, purchased several insurance policies from five companies between 2005 and January 2023, including health, life, accident, long-term care, and travel insurance.
In 2023, Chang conspired with his former high school classmate, Liao, to execute a fraudulent plan. On January 26, they bought dry ice from New Taipei City and went to Liao's home in the Zhongshan District of Taipei. There, Chang placed his bare feet in a bucket filled with dry ice, while Liao restrained him to a chair with plastic straps to prevent him from backing out if the pain became unbearable.
Chang remained in this position from 2 AM until noon, for a total of 10 hours, while Liao documented the process with photos and videos.
Two days later, Chang went to the emergency department of Mackay Memorial Hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe injuries including fourth-degree frostbite, bone necrosis, blood poisoning, and muscle breakdown. As a result, the doctors had to amputate his feet.
The duo attempted to deceive the insurance companies by claiming that Chang was riding a motorcycle at night when he suddenly felt extreme cold in his legs, leading to the frostbite. They then filed claims totaling 41.26 million New Taiwan dollars (1.4 million USD) across eight insurance policies.
One company succeeded in paying 236,427 New Taiwan dollars, but the other four companies discovered inconsistencies and rejected the claims.
Later, all the companies reported the matter to the police, leading to the public prosecutor filing charges of fraud and aiding in intentional self-harm against the duo.
On June 20, the Supreme Court in Taiwan sentenced Chang to two years in prison, suspended, while Liao, who was considered the mastermind, was sentenced to six years in prison.
The court noted that Liao planned the scheme, while Chang suffered severe pain and reached settlements with some companies, unlike Liao, who did not reach any settlement.
The incident sparked a wave of shock across social media, with one user commenting: "This is driven by pure greed." Another added: "Total loss, no money and no feet, and he will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair because of a silly idea."
