In one of the largest legal cases threatening the American tech giant, a U.S. jury has issued a ruling imposing a financial penalty of over $5.7 billion on Apple, following allegations of patent infringement related to one of the most prominent features used in its famous devices.
The legal battle revolved around a lawsuit filed by Taction Technology, accusing the iPhone maker of unfairly exploiting its proprietary technology to operate the Taptic engine responsible for vibrations and haptic alerts in iPhones and Apple Watches. Despite the enormous amount awarded, the jury concluded that Apple's infringement was not intentional, which spared the company from tripling the damages.
For its part, Apple quickly announced its firm rejection of the ruling, asserting that it did not need to use the plaintiff's technology and announcing its full intention to appeal. Legal experts indicate that hefty fines in patent cases in the U.S. often undergo significant reductions during subsequent appeal stages.
The tech sector is closely watching the outcome of this major case, as upcoming rounds of appeals could alter this astronomical amount or reshape the rules for protecting technological innovations in global markets.
