Mohamed Salah, the captain of the Egyptian national team, left the "Pharaohs" camp before the upcoming match against South Sudan scheduled for next Tuesday in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, amid varying opinions regarding the reasons for his departure, coinciding with the escalating dispute between the Egyptian club Al Ahly and the national team coach Hossam Hassan.
The Egyptian Football Association announced that the coaching staff agreed with Salah, before the match against Angola, not to participate against South Sudan, justifying the decision by the staff's desire to rest the player, especially since the match will be played on an artificial turf, which may raise concerns about injuries.
The announcement came after Salah started the match against Angola, which ended in a goalless draw, before being substituted in the 60th minute. The coaching staff clarified after the match that the decision was tactical, confirming that the player was not suffering from any injury, while Egyptian media reports spoke of Salah's dissatisfaction with being substituted, linking it to his decision to leave the camp.
This coincides with another crisis between Al Ahly and Hossam Hassan, after the club issued a statement criticizing the coach's remarks about his goalkeeper and captain Mohamed El Shenawy, whom Hassan described as "finished" when called up to participate in the 2026 World Cup.
Al Ahly confirmed its rejection of any infringement on the technical and moral value of any of its players, while acknowledging the national team coach's right to select players according to his technical vision. The club also objected to Hassan's statements regarding the level of football presented by Egyptian clubs, considering that they undermine the value of the clubs and local competitions.
Al Ahly emphasized the importance of mutual respect among all parties in the system, appreciating the position of the President of the Egyptian Football Association Hani Abou Rida in support of El Shenawy's value, and confirming its anticipation of the Football Association's stance regarding the coach's statements.
Malawi tops Group B with three points, while Egypt and Angola each have one point after their goalless draw.
