A massive fire broke out on a Greek cargo ship while it was sailing north of Mykonos Island in the Aegean Sea, prompting a large-scale rescue operation that resulted in the evacuation of all 29 people on board, with no injuries reported.
The fire erupted on the ship "BLUE CARRIER 2" about 4.5 nautical miles north of Mykonos, while it was sailing from the port of Piraeus, before returning to port after the flames broke out.
There were 28 crew members on board the ship, in addition to one passenger, who was the driver of one of the trucks being transported by the vessel, and everyone was able to leave using lifeboats before being transferred to Tinos Island, all in good health.
The fire started inside one of the ship's garages before spreading to other parts of the vessel, with initial information suggesting a possible link between the outbreak of the fire and a truck that was in garage number 4, although Greek authorities have not announced the final cause of the incident.
The ship was carrying 166 trucks and 29 private cars, which complicated firefighting operations and prompted authorities to mobilize firefighting ships, tugs, and units from the coast guard, in addition to a helicopter to monitor the developments of the incident.
Authorities reported that the fire was partially under control as its intensity decreased, while firefighting and cooling operations continued, alongside efforts to stabilize the ship in preparation for damage assessment.
Pumping large amounts of water inside the ship caused it to tilt slightly to one side, prompting rescue teams to pump water out and monitor its stability, with no immediate danger of sinking reported.
The Greek authorities took precautionary measures to monitor any potential leakage of pollutants into the Aegean Sea, while the relevant authorities began an investigation to determine the circumstances and cause of the fire.
The "BLUE CARRIER 2" is a Ro-Ro cargo ship designed for transporting trucks and vehicles, flying the Greek flag, and measuring approximately 162 meters in length, with current efforts focused on extinguishing the remaining flames, maintaining the stability of the ship, and assessing the damage.
