The journey of 3 tourists to a secluded beach in the state of Oregon, USA, to capture a unique photo turned into a rescue operation after rising tides trapped them and cut off their way back, forcing them to write an "SOS" signal using pieces of wood on the beach to request help.
5 Hours on the Beach
The tourists, two men and a woman in their twenties, had headed to "Lost Boy Beach" in Tillamook County during low tide in search of a spot to take pictures.
However, the rising waters closed off the path they had entered from, leaving the three stranded in a remote area for about 5 hours, amid strong waves and dropping temperatures.
No Phone Coverage
The situation was made more difficult by the lack of regular phone coverage in the area located below a steep slope, but one member of the group managed to contact emergency services "911" using the satellite calling feature on a smart device.
After receiving the report, fire and rescue teams launched a drone to search for them, before spotting them on a small patch of land, where they had gathered pieces of wood and written the letters "SOS" in large letters on the sand to mark their location.
Rescue with Ropes
The emergency teams initially considered waiting for the tide to recede, but they decided to intervene due to the strength of the waves, the cold water, and concerns about the tourists suffering from hypothermia.
Three rescue team members moved in using ropes and life jackets, and they were able to reach the tourists and help them cross the water to a safe area.
The incident ended without serious injuries, as the three only suffered from some scrapes and minor bruises, while the rescue teams urged visitors to secluded beaches to check tide schedules before entering.
