A traditional question about art and reconciliation between two stars whose news has burned social media platforms for years suddenly transformed into an unexpected answer that shifted the conversation from the spotlight of stages to the darkness of tents. In the backstage of her honoring at the "Dior Ghaist" festival in Cairo, Syrian artist Sulaf Fawakherji was asked about her opinion on the exceptional concert held by her contemporary, Assala Nasri, in the capital, Damascus, recently. Despite everyone expecting a response wrapped in diplomacy or caution regarding past disagreements, Sulaf completely redirected the conversation.
Sulaf expressed her happiness at the joy brought by Assala's return, affirming that any event that brings Syrians together and spreads joy among them deserves support without hesitation. However, the real surprise came when she linked this artistic return to a deeper and more painful humanitarian issue, considering that joy is not complete with a star standing on stage, but rather with a spark igniting a deeper return for all the displaced.
Sulaf sent a direct message that transcended the backstage of the event, hoping that Assala's return would be just the beginning of dismantling the crises of displacement, stating that the greatest hope lies in seeing millions of expatriates and residents of the "camps" return to their lands and homes.
And although she revealed that she did not watch the concert due to her commitment to an artistic festival in Egypt, her focus on the plight of refugees transformed the artistic question into a completely different political and humanitarian stance.
