تسببت عاصفة تشهدها مناطق شمال شرق الولايات المتحدة في انقطاع الكهرباء عن أكثر من 70 ألف مشترك، اليوم (السبت)، بالتزامن مع رياح قوية وأمطار وارتفاع الأمواج على امتداد أجزاء من الساحل الشرقي.
رياح تصل إلى 105 كيلومترات
وبحسب هيئة الأرصاد الجوية الوطنية الأمريكية، وصلت سرعة هبات الرياح المتوقعة في مناطق كيب كود ومارثاز فينيارد ونانتوكيت إلى ما بين 97 و105 كيلومترات في الساعة، فيما تراوحت حول بوسطن بين 80 و89 كيلومتراً في الساعة.
وحذر خبراء الأرصاد من احتمال سقوط أغصان الأشجار وخطوط الكهرباء بسبب الرياح، خصوصاً مع بقاء أوراق الأشجار في هذا الوقت من العام، ما يزيد مقاومتها للرياح ويرفع احتمالات سقوطها وحدوث مزيد من انقطاعات الكهرباء.
مياه تغمر بعض الطرق
وفي ولاية نيوجيرسي، غمرت المياه عدداً من الطرق والمنازل في المناطق الساحلية، فيما صدرت توصيات بالإخلاء الطوعي لبعض المناطق المنخفضة في بلدة ماناسكوان.
كما حذرت الأرصاد من فيضانات ساحلية في أجزاء من نيوجيرسي وديلاوير، مع استمرار تأثير الرياح والأمطار خلال عطلة نهاية الأسبوع.
إلغاء رحلات جوية
وامتدت تأثيرات الأحوال الجوية إلى حركة النقل، إذ أُلغيت أكثر من 200 رحلة جوية من وإلى مطارات في بوسطن ونانتوكيت ومارثاز فينيارد ونيويورك، إضافة إلى إلغاء عدد من رحلات العبارات بسبب الرياح واضطراب البحر.
ويتوقع أن تستمر تأثيرات العاصفة خلال عطلة نهاية الأسبوع، فيما تواصل السلطات وفرق الطوارئ متابعة انقطاعات الكهرباء والفيضانات في المناطق المتأثرة.
A storm affecting areas in the northeastern United States has caused power outages for more than 70,000 customers today (Saturday), coinciding with strong winds, rain, and rising waves along parts of the East Coast.
Winds reaching 105 kilometers
According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts in areas such as Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket are expected to reach between 97 and 105 kilometers per hour, while in the Boston area, they ranged from 80 to 89 kilometers per hour.
Weather experts warned of the possibility of falling tree branches and power lines due to the winds, especially with leaves still on the trees at this time of year, which increases their resistance to the winds and raises the likelihood of falling and causing further power outages.
Water flooding some roads
In New Jersey, water has flooded several roads and homes in coastal areas, and voluntary evacuation recommendations have been issued for some low-lying areas in the town of Manasquan.
The weather service also warned of coastal flooding in parts of New Jersey and Delaware, as the effects of the winds and rain continue throughout the weekend.
Flight cancellations
The impacts of the weather have extended to transportation, with more than 200 flights to and from airports in Boston, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and New York being canceled, in addition to several ferry trips due to the winds and rough seas.
The effects of the storm are expected to continue throughout the weekend, as authorities and emergency teams monitor power outages and flooding in the affected areas.
