The death toll from the sinking of the ferry "Virgo Transport 8" in the Java Sea in Indonesia has risen to 64, while 71 people are still missing, with search and rescue operations continuing for the 14th consecutive day.
243 People on Board the Ferry
The ferry was carrying 243 people, including 213 passengers and 30 crew members, when it encountered the incident during its journey from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan.
According to the latest data from the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency "Basarnas," as of Saturday evening, 172 people have been found, including 108 survivors and 64 deceased, while search operations continue for the 71 missing.
11 Bodies Found in One Day
On Saturday, the search operations witnessed the recovery of an additional 11 bodies, as divers found 4 of them near the wreck of the sunken ferry, while 7 other bodies were discovered in various locations in Central Kalimantan's waters, including Sukamara, Seruyan, and Bangkalan Bon.
The recovered bodies are undergoing identification procedures before being handed over to the victims' families.
Ferry Capsized Amid Strong Waves and Winds
The incident occurred on September 13, when the ferry faced strong waves and winds during its journey in the Java Sea, before it began to tilt sharply and communication with it was lost later.
Indonesian authorities reported that search operations began immediately after losing contact with the vessel, involving maritime vessels, aircraft, helicopters, and diving teams, in addition to ships that were nearby the incident site and helped rescue several passengers.
Passengers Trapped Inside Cabins
Divers faced significant difficulties in accessing parts of the ferry due to poor visibility and strong currents, while several victims were found inside the ship's cabins in recent days.
In some recovery operations, divers had to break the windows of the cabins to reach the victims trapped inside, while the stacked vehicles within the ferry posed an additional danger to the diving teams.
Search Extended for 7 Days
The authorities decided to extend the search and rescue operations for an additional 7 days, with evaluations of progress to be conducted every 3 days, in an attempt to reach the remaining missing individuals.
The head of the Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency, Muhammad Syafi, confirmed that the teams will continue their operations using personnel, ships, divers, and aircraft, while expanding the search area around the ferry's sinking site and areas where the currents may have carried the victims.
