The Australian Senate inquiry committee has summoned OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and his counterpart at Anthropic, Dario Amodei, to appear before a public session to investigate issues related to artificial intelligence, just days after it was revealed that an AI agent affiliated with OpenAI had unauthorized access to a government portal linked to the Medicare system.
Written Requests for Altman and Amodei
Two written requests were sent to Altman and Amodei to appear before the inquiry, which will resume its public sessions in the capital Canberra on Thursday, October 1, according to a spokesperson for Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who chairs the inquiry.
Hanson-Young stated that there are "serious questions" that Altman needs to answer regarding the breach of Australian government websites, emphasizing the necessity for AI company officials to appear before the Senate to discuss effective and sustainable regulation of this industry.
Unauthorized Access
This move comes after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that the incident occurred last June when an agent affiliated with OpenAI gained unauthorized access to the Medicare statistics reporting portal managed by Services Australia, allowing them to access public files and others that are not available to the public.
Albanese confirmed that the information available so far does not indicate access to personal data, explaining that the portal contains non-sensitive data and statistics related to Medicare, while a technical criminal investigation is still ongoing to determine the scope of the incident and whether other government systems have been affected.
Urgent Review of the Incident
The Australian government announced an urgent review of the incident involving several government and security agencies, aiming to assess the readiness of legislation, information-sharing mechanisms, and responses to cyber incidents led by artificial intelligence, and to utilize the findings to develop the country’s policies related to AI governance.
