The U.S. administration has adopted a new approach to break away from traditional nomenclature in the tech world, following President Donald Trump's announcement to eliminate the use of the term "artificial intelligence" in all government documents and to gradually phase out its description as AI.
Trump launched this stance from the platform of the United Nations General Assembly, justifying the move by stating that the term "artificial" gives a misleading impression as if the technology is merely a fake thing that does not reflect its capabilities, announcing the adoption of the term "superintelligence" or SI as the official alternative within U.S. institutions, and urging other countries to follow suit.
The U.S. government's amendment has sparked astonishment among technology experts, as researchers believe that the two concepts do not express the same thing. While the old term describes current software, the concept of "superintelligence" in scientific circles refers to an advanced future stage where systems surpass human cognitive abilities on a large scale.
This naming comes amid a rapidly accelerating race between Washington and Beijing for control over the sector, as the U.S. administration rejects calls to slow down research for fear of giving competitors a chance to close the gap, while simultaneously focusing on imposing export restrictions and seeking communication channels regarding potential risks.
This change appears to be a clear measure to reshape the mental image of advanced technology, even though the gap remains significant between the new administrative term and the scientific definition in use in laboratories.
