تحولت فرحة التأهل التاريخي لمنتخب الإكوادور إلى احتفال وطني، بعدما أعلن الرئيس دانيال نوبوا يوم الجمعة عطلة رسمية في جميع أنحاء البلاد، احتفاءً ببلوغ المنتخب الأدوار الإقصائية في بطولة كأس العالم 2026، في إنجاز أعاد الجماهير الإكوادورية إلى واجهة المشهد العالمي بعد عقدين من الزمن.
وأعلن نوبوا القرار عبر حسابه على منصة «إكس»، موجهًا رسالة إشادة إلى لاعبي المنتخب والجهاز الفني، قال فيها: «شكرًا للاعبين والمدرب.. رغم الانتقادات والإهانات والظروف الصعبة، تمكنوا من تجاوز كل التحديات ومنح الشعب الإكوادوري فرحة كبيرة... غدًا عطلة».
وجاء القرار بعد ساعات من الفوز المثير الذي حققه منتخب الإكوادور على نظيره الألماني بنتيجة (2-1) في الجولة الأخيرة من منافسات المجموعة الخامسة، بعدما قلب تأخره بهدف مبكر إلى انتصار ثمين ضمن له العبور إلى الدور الإقصائي، وأشعل موجة واسعة من الاحتفالات في مختلف المدن الإكوادورية.
ودخل المنتخب الإكوادوري المباراة وهو أمام فرصة أخيرة للحفاظ على آماله في التأهل، بعدما اكتفى بالتعادل أمام كوراساو وتلقى خسارة أمام كوت ديفوار في أول جولتين، إلا أنه نجح في تحقيق انتصار تاريخي منحه بطاقة العبور ضمن أفضل المنتخبات صاحبة المركز الثالث.
ورغم خسارتها، احتفظت ألمانيا بصدارة المجموعة بعدما كانت قد ضمنت التأهل مسبقًا، فيما حلت كوت ديفوار في المركز الثاني إثر فوزها على كوراساو، لترافق ألمانيا إلى الدور التالي.
ويمثل هذا الإنجاز ثاني تأهل للإكوادور إلى الأدوار الإقصائية في تاريخ مشاركاتها بكأس العالم، بعد إنجاز مونديال 2006، حين بلغت دور الـ16، ليكتب الجيل الحالي صفحة جديدة في تاريخ الكرة الإكوادورية.
وتقام بطولة كأس العالم 2026 لأول مرة بمشاركة 48 منتخبًا، في أكبر نسخة بتاريخ البطولة، حيث جرى توزيع الفرق على 12 مجموعة تضم كل منها أربعة منتخبات.
ويتأهل صاحبا المركزين الأول والثاني في كل مجموعة مباشرة إلى دور الـ32، إضافة إلى أفضل ثمانية منتخبات تحتل المركز الثالث، وهو النظام الجديد الذي رفع عدد المنتخبات المتأهلة إلى الأدوار الإقصائية إلى 32 منتخبًا للمرة الأولى.
ومن المقرر أن تنطلق منافسات دور الـ32 اعتبارًا من 28 يونيو، بينما تستضيف الولايات المتحدة المباراة النهائية يوم 19 يوليو على ملعب «ميت لايف» في ولاية نيوجيرسي، أحد أكبر الملاعب المستضيفة للبطولة.
The joy of Ecuador's historic qualification for the national team turned into a national celebration, after President Daniel Noboa announced on Friday a public holiday across the country, in honor of the team reaching the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup, an achievement that brought Ecuadorian fans back to the global stage after two decades.
Noboa announced the decision via his account on the "X" platform, directing a message of praise to the players and coaching staff, saying: "Thank you to the players and the coach.. despite the criticisms, insults, and difficult circumstances, they managed to overcome all challenges and bring great joy to the Ecuadorian people... Tomorrow is a holiday."
The decision came hours after the thrilling victory achieved by the Ecuadorian team over their German counterparts with a score of (2-1) in the final round of Group E, after turning around an early deficit into a valuable win that secured their passage to the knockout stage, igniting a wide wave of celebrations in various Ecuadorian cities.
The Ecuadorian team entered the match with a last chance to keep their hopes of qualification alive, having only managed a draw against Curaçao and suffered a loss to Côte d'Ivoire in the first two rounds, but they succeeded in achieving a historic victory that granted them a ticket to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
Despite their loss, Germany retained the top spot in the group after having already secured qualification, while Côte d'Ivoire finished in second place following their victory over Curaçao, accompanying Germany to the next round.
This achievement marks Ecuador's second qualification to the knockout stages in the history of their World Cup participations, following the accomplishment in the 2006 World Cup, when they reached the Round of 16, allowing the current generation to write a new chapter in the history of Ecuadorian football.
The 2026 World Cup will be held for the first time with the participation of 48 teams, in the largest edition in the tournament's history, with teams divided into 12 groups, each consisting of four teams.
The top two teams from each group will qualify directly to the Round of 32, in addition to the best eight teams that finish in third place, which is the new system that has raised the number of teams qualifying for the knockout stages to 32 for the first time.
The Round of 32 is set to kick off on June 28, while the United States will host the final match on July 19 at the "MetLife" Stadium in New Jersey, one of the largest venues hosting the tournament.
