كما حُظر بيت روز، قائد الضربات في MLB، مدى الحياة في 1989 بعد اكتشاف رهانه على مباريات أثناء إدارته لسينسيناتي ريدز، وبعد إصرار الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب المتكرر، أُزيل روز من قائمة غير المؤهلين بشكل دائم بعد وفاته هذا العام، ما يجعله مؤهلاً لقاعة المشاهير.

Millions of Dollars in Illicit Gains
FBI Director Kash Patel described the schemes—one focusing on insider sports betting and the other on rigging poker games at a national level—as having spanned years and resulted in illicit gains of tens of millions of dollars through wire fraud, money laundering, extortion, and gambling, emphasizing in a press conference in Brooklyn that this is "the story of NBA insider trading."
According to U.S. media, Rozier (31) was charged as one of several officials within the league for providing non-public information about upcoming games to his criminal associates, who used fake bets to multiply their wagers based on this insider information.
For example, in March 2023, Rozier informed his associates in advance that he would leave the game early under the pretense of injury, allowing them to bet over $200,000 that he would not achieve his expected statistics, according to authorities.
Billups (49) was charged in a separate case with assisting in rigging poker games to deceive unsuspecting players, who were lured into the games with the promise of playing with celebrities.
Advanced Technology for Rigging Games in New York
The investigations indicate that the defendants used advanced technology to rig games in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, and elsewhere, including fake card shufflers and X-ray tables.
The scheme involved organized crime families in New York: Bonanno, Gambino, Lucchese, and Genovese, which controlled some underground poker games, took a share of the profits, and used extortion and theft to collect unpaid debts, laundering the proceeds through cryptocurrencies and other means, according to prosecutors.
Although the arrests stem from two separate indictments, a handful of defendants faced charges in both cases, including Damon Jones, a former player and assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn Joseph Nocella stated that these charges represent "one of the most brazen sports corruption schemes since the rise of online sports betting."
NBA's Response
In an official statement, the NBA confirmed that Rozier and Billups have been placed on leave and that the league will continue to cooperate with authorities, stating: "We take these allegations very seriously, and the integrity of our game remains our top priority," according to the statement.
Rozier's attorney, James Trusty, defended him, saying that the prosecutors "seem to rely on the words of unreliable sources rather than actual evidence of wrongdoing. Terry has been cleared by the NBA, and these prosecutors have revived a nonexistent case."
The arrests come amid increased scrutiny over the relationship between online sports betting platforms and professional sports leagues, which have benefited from a massive expansion in legal betting while trying to reassure fans and bettors that the integrity of the game is unaffected.
This comes as some lawmakers have expressed concerns about the prevalence of bets that can easily be manipulated by players, such as prop bets, where users bet on specific individual statistics for a player in a particular game.
In a related development, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver supported greater federal regulation of sports betting in an interview with "The Pat McAfee Show" on ESPN Tuesday, noting that the league has asked some betting partners to limit prop bets for less prominent players.
Previous Penalties on Players
In recent years, there have been penalties imposed on players in the "big four" North American men's sports leagues (NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL) due to gambling. Former NBA player Jontay Porter was banned for life from the league and convicted in 2024 after being accused of manipulating his performance to help his associates win bets on his game, a case linked to Thursday's indictment.
Similarly, Pete Rose, MLB's all-time hits leader, was banned for life in 1989 after it was discovered that he bet on games while managing the Cincinnati Reds. Following repeated insistence from President Donald Trump, Rose was removed from the permanently ineligible list after his death this year, making him eligible for the Hall of Fame.
Billups is in his fifth year as head coach of Portland and has played for seven teams in his career, including the New York Knicks, winning a championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004, where he was named NBA Finals MVP. He was expected to appear in court on Thursday in Portland.
Rozier, in his eleventh season, averaging 13.9 points per game in his career, with a salary of $26.6 million for the 2025-26 season according to Spotrac, was arrested in Orlando, Florida, where the Heat played against the Magic on Wednesday night, and is expected to appear in court there on Thursday evening.
