North Korean President Kim Jong Un has ousted Defense Minister No Kwang Chol. Kim Sung Gi, the director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People's Army, has been appointed in his place.
Official media confirmed today (Sunday) that adjustments have been made to the military leadership of the country.
The official Korean Central News Agency reported that decisions for structural reorganization were made during a meeting chaired by the Korean leader yesterday (Saturday).
The agency added that No Kwang Chol was not only relieved of his position as Minister of Defense but was also demoted in the ruling party leadership to become "the first deputy director of the Munitions Industry Department."
Defense Advisor Pak Jong Chon was appointed as the Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling party and a member of the party's Political Bureau, in addition to a series of other promotions.
The report indicated that Kim praised scientists, researchers, and officials during a ceremony held in recognition of their achievements in defense technology, as they were awarded the highest national honors.
It added that the honorees significantly contributed to "solving scientifically and technically important historical problems in the development of new combat weapon systems," without specifying them.
It noted that the state weapons research center recently developed exclusive technologies that are a significant milestone in enhancing war-fighting capabilities. The report stated that these technologies demonstrated the unique development trajectory of the country's military and technological capabilities.
In late June, Kim oversaw tests for a new system for launching multiple long-range missiles.
The reshaping of military leadership in North Korea comes shortly after the conclusion of joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States. These exercises, which Pyongyang regularly condemns and considers preparations for invasion, were closely monitored this year after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a reduction in his country's participation.
Trump criticized the exercises, describing them as provocative to North Korea, attacking Seoul for not supporting his war against Iran. The U.S. President praised North Korean leader Kim, whom he met twice during his first term, as he looks forward to holding another meeting with him.
Military cooperation between Washington and its regional allies is set to continue, as South Korea, the United States, and Japan plan to conduct joint trilateral exercises named "Freedom Edge" in waters east and south of South Korea's Jeju Island from September 7 to 11.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul reported that these exercises are a defensive training conducted annually by the three countries to counter North Korean nuclear and missile threats and to maintain peace and stability in the region.
