Finnish President Alexander Stubb ruled out the possibility of Russia launching an attack against any NATO member state, while emphasizing the importance of the alliance continuing to prepare for various potential scenarios.
Stubb said in an interview with the German newspaper "Bild" yesterday (Saturday): "I don't believe that Russia would want to attack NATO, the strongest military alliance in the world," adding that he does not see indicators or evidence supporting the likelihood of Moscow taking such a step, and that his assessment is based on intelligence information.
He explained that the large military capabilities possessed by the alliance, particularly in the field of conventional weapons, missiles, and nuclear weapons, make an attack on it extremely difficult, pointing out that Russia seeks to spread panic in Europe through what he described as "media warfare."
He added that Russia is suffering significant losses in Ukraine, losing between 30,000 and 35,000 soldiers monthly, compared to recruiting about 27,000, considering that this limits its ability to increase its troop numbers.
The Finnish president continued: "I simply cannot imagine that they would suddenly be able to mobilize forces to fight on two fronts," referring to the military challenges facing Russia.
Stubb believes that Ukraine is in a stronger position than it has been at any time since the outbreak of the war in 2022, urging European countries to continue their support.
He said: "We must understand that Ukraine is our best security guarantee against Russia, and if Ukraine loses, we will lose too."
Western officials have warned of the increasing risks of what they describe as Russian hybrid operations, including cyberattacks against European countries, and the possibility that this could lead to a direct confrontation with NATO, while German officials stated that their estimates indicate that Russia could be in a position to attack one of the alliance's countries by 2029.
