Sources and eyewitnesses confirmed that the capital of Niger, Niamey, witnessed heavy gunfire and explosions in the vicinity of the international airport and near the presidential palace and several areas of the city during the early hours of this Saturday morning, with the nature of the events or the responsible party remaining unclear.
Explosions near a military base
Reuters reported that two witnesses confirmed hearing continuous gunfire and explosions in several areas of Niamey, with one stating that the sounds of gunfire were concentrated around Diori Hamani International Airport, near the presidential palace.
The second witness mentioned that there was intense gunfire exchange occurring in the capital, adding that the sounds of gunfire were still ongoing around the presidential palace. AFP reported that residents in Niamey heard gunfire and explosions near a military base inside the international airport.
One resident told the agency that there was "heavy gunfire and explosions at Base 101 in Niamey," while other witnesses confirmed hearing the same sounds.
The military council stated on its official social media pages: "In light of the ongoing events, we must remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. Our defensive and security forces are on alert to defend the homeland."
AFP confirmed the interruption of broadcasts from Niger's state television. The reasons for the interruption were not immediately clear, nor whether it was directly related to the security events occurring in the city.
It is also unclear whether the events around the airport and the palace are linked to a single operation, and the Nigerien authorities have not announced a possible toll of victims or details regarding the nature of the attack.
Military base near the airport
The 101 military base is located in the vicinity of Diori Hamani International Airport in the capital, which is a sensitive security area that has previously been targeted by attacks this year.
According to AFP, the area has been attacked twice by extremist militants this year, while a Reuters report mentioned an attack that occurred near Niamey International Airport last January.
The new developments come amid escalating security challenges facing Niger, where armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS are active, particularly in areas close to the borders of Mali and Burkina Faso.
In March, at least 44 civilians were killed in an attack in the southwest of the country, as part of a series of attacks that continued despite military authorities' pledges to improve the security situation.
Three years of military rule
The military has ruled Niger since the coup in July 2023, which ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and brought the military council led by General Abdourahamane Tiani to power.
Since then, Niamey has reshaped its foreign relations, distancing itself from its traditional Western partners, particularly France and the United States, while strengthening cooperation with Russia.
Niger has followed a similar path to Mali and Burkina Faso, which are also under military rule. The three countries formed the "Sahel States Alliance," which evolved into a security and political framework as their governments sought to coordinate efforts to combat armed groups and reshape their foreign alliances.
Despite the significant political and security transformations in the region, armed attacks remain one of the most prominent challenges facing the authorities in Niger.
