American lawmakers have revealed that the Trump administration is nearing the official designation of the "Muslim Brotherhood" as a terrorist organization, according to the Washington Free Beacon. Sources working on this issue reported that lawmakers have multiple ways to financially obstruct the Brotherhood.

These recent efforts gained momentum when the Global Anti-Semitism Institute and Policy held a closed briefing for congressional staff that "focused on developing strategies to counter the increasing threat of the Brotherhood in the United States."

The group is classified as a terrorist organization in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Syria, and Bahrain, but Washington has yet to take this step, despite repeated attempts by Congress in the past.

During Trump's first term, officials in the White House and Congress began paving the way to punish the global branches of the Brotherhood, but it did not reach the point of designating the group as a "terrorist organization." With the Republican Party holding a slim majority in Congress, the new effort to classify the Brotherhood will likely receive broad support.

According to a Republican source in Congress, there are several methods the United States uses to designate groups as terrorist organizations, suggesting that Congress will choose the appropriate option among them.

The United States could classify the Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization, which would lead to sanctions against its leaders and the freezing of its assets. The second option would be to add it to the list of global terrorist organizations, which imposes similar financial sanctions, according to sources familiar with these efforts.

The newspaper quoted Republican Senator Ted Cruz as saying that the Brotherhood has resorted to political violence to achieve political goals and destabilize U.S. allies, both within countries and across national borders.

He argued that the group has exploited the administration of former President Joe Biden to enhance and deepen its influence, but the Trump administration and the Republican Congress can no longer afford to ignore the threat it poses to Americans and U.S. national security.

Republican Representative Ashley Hinson viewed the Trump administration's ongoing efforts to target terrorist factions as potentially paving the way to expand its scope to include the international branches of the Muslim Brotherhood. She emphasized the necessity of designating the Brotherhood or any other organization as a terrorist entity.
