The Yemeni Women's Empowerment Foundation launched an urgent call for help today (Sunday) to save the health sector in Taiz from collapse, warning of a humanitarian disaster threatening the lives of thousands of patients and wounded individuals, amid the ongoing siege by the Houthi terrorist militia and its attacks, as well as the spread of epidemics and shortages of medicines and medical supplies.
The foundation confirmed in a statement today that about 52% of hospitals and medical centers have gone out of service, while the remaining facilities are struggling with limited resources, amid an increasing number of cases of epidemic diseases, including dengue fever, malaria, and acute watery diarrhea.
The foundation clarified that the Houthis are targeting ambulances and medical personnel, warning that the continued assaults on health facilities, medical teams, and ambulances must be addressed.
It pointed out that the deterioration of water and sanitation services exacerbates the suffering of children, women, the elderly, cancer patients, those with kidney failure, and individuals with chronic diseases, and threatens the lives of the wounded who need urgent surgeries and specialized care.
The foundation appealed to the United Nations, the World Health Organization, Doctors Without Borders, the International Committee of the Red Cross, UNICEF, the United Nations Population Fund, and donor organizations for immediate intervention to reactivate the halted hospitals, provide medicines, fuel, and medical equipment, send teams to combat epidemics, ensure the delivery of ambulances and medical supplies, and open safe humanitarian corridors and lift the siege.
The foundation stated that Taiz is facing an extremely harsh scene, where the wounded are bleeding, patients are battling epidemics and a lack of treatment, while paramedics are being killed as they attempt to save lives, and hospitals are struggling to survive with nearly collapsed resources.
It concluded its appeal by warning against leaving the victims of shelling and sniping to face death twice; once under the fire of the Houthi terrorist militia, and again due to the absence of treatment, the spread of epidemics, and the collapse of health facilities.
