The blood does not become less sacred because its shedder invokes a just cause, nor does the aggression against sacred places become less criminal because its perpetrator borrows the language of defending them. The sanctity that changes with the change of the aggressor becomes a hostage to whims, and whoever waits to know the killer's banner before looking at the blood of the victim makes their bias a judge over their principle. It is inconsistent to exalt human life in our creed and then bargain over its sanctity in our positions.
From here comes the importance of the statement issued by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars regarding the crimes of the Houthi militia, as it gathered the faces of aggression on a single scale: the violation of the sanctity of innocent lives, then property, then security and stability, and then the attempt to violate the sanctities of Muslims that Allah has exalted and commanded to be honored. It reconsidered the reality of actions, far from the slogans raised by their perpetrators.
Thus, the combination of the sanctity of human life and the sanctity of places is a clear principle in the Prophet’s ﷺ sermon on the Day of Sacrifice during the Farewell Pilgrimage: "Indeed, your blood, your property, and your honor are sacred among you, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours." He made the sanctity of the sacred city a measure by which the sanctity of human life is known, so the exaltation of sacred places cannot be separated from the protection of blood, and it is inconsistent for anyone to raise their voice in love for sanctities and then extend their hand to violate them.
However, when slogans overshadow this scale, they shift our attention from the rights of the victim to the narrative of the aggressor. We become preoccupied with what they say about their intentions and overlook what their hands have done. Just causes do not grant anyone a license to spill the blood of people. Whoever claims to support the oppressed has no right to create new victims, and whoever relies on the oppression of a people cannot use it as a justification to terrorize another people.
The statement began by targeting civilians and civilian facilities in our brotherly Yemen, so that Yemenis remain present as victims of this aggression. The militia does not represent Yemen, and its crimes do not represent its people. The confusion between the people and those who have imposed themselves upon them obscures the suffering of the victims and gives the perpetrator the opportunity to speak on behalf of those they oppress. Therefore, our clear stance on the crimes of the Houthis requires a similar clarity in standing with the Yemenis and their right to a safe life.
When the statement addresses the attempt to target Mecca and Medina, it places Muslims before a responsibility that relates to the holiest things that unite them. Allah Almighty said about the Sacred Mosque: ﴿Equal are the resident and the visitor﴾. The resident and the visitor share the right to it, and the warning in the same verse came: ﴿And whoever intends therein [i.e., the Sacred Mosque] to commit wrongdoing, we will make him taste of a painful punishment﴾ [Al-Hajj: 25]. If the warning addressed the intention of wrongdoing in the Sacred Mosque, what about those who go beyond it to prepare weapons and attempt aggression? This reveals the gravity of the aggression against the place and its visitors.
The statement affirmed that Allah thwarted their plot against them and granted success to the vigilance of the Saudi air defense and the efficiency of our armed forces. However, thwarting the attempt prevents the intended harm but does not erase the responsibility of its perpetrators. The survival of the targeted does not grant the aggressor innocence.
Security has a meaning that people recognize in the details of their daily lives: that a father leaves for work assured about his family, that a child sleeps without the night turning into a wait for danger, that a pilgrim’s heart is preoccupied with worship, and that a Muslim approaches the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in safety. This normal life is guarded by men who bear their responsibility so that tranquility remains familiar in the lives of others.
Here lies the difference between the logic of the state and the logic of the militia. The responsibility of the state is to bear arms to protect sanctities, while the Houthi militia uses them to violate them. The decision to defend the homeland and manage its operations is the responsibility of the state and its institutions under its leadership. Our responsibility is to support it with awareness and steadfastness, by verifying news, rejecting rumors, maintaining a unified stance, and avoiding debates that distract attention from the aggressor.
The call of the council to Muslims to denounce these crimes and stand united against those who violate their sanctities translates solidarity into a practical test. Political readings may differ, but the difference does not change the sanctity of an innocent soul, nor does it grant aggression an acceptable face. The declaration of the exaltation of sanctities is easy in times of tranquility, but its truth is revealed when they are violated, and the stance then has a price.
Final word:
Whoever asks about the killer's banner before asking about the blood of the victim has granted the banner a sanctity that it has deprived from the human being. The true exaltation of sanctities means that their guardian should not be left alone.
