The United Nations was not established to be a formal structure that consumes the budgets of countries on operational expenses, salaries, and assignments for a president, employees, and UN envoys who come and go. Rather, its charter was issued to express a phase after two world wars that left their negative impacts on humanity as a whole, and subjected peoples to the bitterness of destruction and displacement.
The purpose of establishing the organization was to maintain international peace and security, to take effective measures and actions to prevent anything that threatens the security and stability of peoples, and to confront any hostile act that leads to the violation of state sovereignty, while limiting the transgressions and violations issued by any entity or component, considering that the United Nations stands at an equal distance from all parties, and anyone who joins it is obligated to its decisions.
UN policies stipulate the necessity of international consensus to save generations from the ravages of wars, according to the language of the charter signed by the founding countries of the United Nations, which are permanent members, and they affirmed their belief in the fundamental rights of humans and the dignity of individuals, and that all humans have equal rights regardless of their nationality, color, or beliefs, ensuring a life in peace and good neighborliness.
Upon a closer reading of the history and literature of the United Nations, we find that successive Israeli governments have disregarded all international charters and norms; they have ignored decisions issued condemning the occupation and those that recognized the rights of the Palestinian people. Perhaps the world, along with all the honorable people, lovers, and advocates of peace, wonders who has weakened the role of the organization through violations and indifference? Will the United Nations continue to be a place of credibility and reliability, or will it diminish as the hope of the Palestinians for a just peace endorsed by the organization diminishes?
