The Asir region is witnessing a rapid expansion in water infrastructure projects, with the implementation of 78 projects valued at over 4.5 billion riyals, in a move aimed at enhancing water supply security, improving service efficiency, and keeping pace with the population, developmental, and tourism growth in the area.
In this context, the Chairman of the Saudi Water Authority, Engineer Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al-Abdulkarim, discussed with the Acting CEO of the Asir Development Authority, Dr. Amr bin Hamoud Al-Omari, ways to develop the water sector's infrastructure and enhance its sustainability, to meet the needs of the population and support the region's development goals.
The meeting addressed the most prominent water projects currently being implemented, their role in ensuring the continuity of supplies, improving service quality, and addressing the increasing demand for water, in addition to supporting the implementation of the Asir region's strategic outputs.
Al-Abdulkarim also inspected several water system projects in the region, affiliated with water solutions companies, water transport, and national water, along with the General Irrigation Corporation, to assess the progress of work and levels of achievement, and to review the efforts of national personnel in executing and operating the projects to serve the region's residents and various sectors.
The ongoing project system in Asir includes 78 projects with a total cost of 4.5 billion riyals, along with the completion of 6 initiatives aimed at improving water services. The service development initiatives have contributed to reducing the average waiting time for non-network water supply services to just two hours.
The geographical and mountainous nature of Asir poses specific challenges to water projects, as some areas reach an elevation of about 2,500 meters above sea level, necessitating advanced engineering and operational solutions to ensure efficient water delivery to high-altitude population centers, in addition to enhancing opportunities for energy utilization and reuse.
Since 2023, the region has witnessed a remarkable expansion in the lengths of water networks, which have increased by about 120%, coinciding with a 15% increase in the capacities of sewage treatment plants.
It is expected that the coverage rate of water networks in Asir will exceed 80% upon the completion of current projects, which will enhance the readiness of the infrastructure and support the expansion of developmental and tourism projects in the region.
