China has temporarily suspended the establishment of new projects for manufacturing automotive and energy batteries until the end of the year to review the production capacity of the sector, in a move aimed at reducing oversupply and price wars.
According to a report by "Shanghai Securities News" cited by Bloomberg, projects that have received approvals or have begun construction will continue, while projects still in the planning stages may be suspended.
This step comes after regulatory authorities warned manufacturers throughout the year against excessive expansion of production capacity.
The authorities aim to avoid repeating the experience of the solar energy industry, in which China dominates global manufacturing, but the rapid expansion of factories has outpaced demand growth, leading to fierce price wars and causing major companies to incur billions of dollars in losses.
Analysts at "Morgan Stanley" stated that tightening restrictions could benefit companies that are utilizing most of their production capacity, as "Contemporary Amperex Technology" achieved a utilization rate of 95% in the first half, compared to an average of 65% for the sector.
Halting new projects may accelerate the consolidation of the Chinese battery industry and increase the utilization rates of existing factories, which would support a more balanced competitive environment and alleviate price pressures in the electric vehicle battery and energy storage market.
