The Egyptian security forces arrested the owner of a restaurant chain in Alexandria after suspecting that meals he served to his customers caused 28 people to suffer from food poisoning, leading to their transfer to hospitals in Alexandria and Beheira. This came amid urgent action from executive and regulatory authorities to close and seal the three branches of the restaurant and investigate the potential source of contamination.
The incident began with reports circulating on social media about a group of citizens suffering from food poisoning after eating potato meals from one of the Syrian food restaurants in Alexandria, prompting the local authorities and the Ministry of Interior to take action to investigate the complaints. It later became clear that hospitals in Alexandria received 24 cases, while hospitals in Beheira received four cases from the same family, all of whom had eaten meals from the same restaurant.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Interior, the First Police Station in Montazah received a report from one of the hospitals indicating that injured individuals were suffering from symptoms of poisoning after consuming ready-made meals, while another report was received by the Kafr El-Dawar Police Station regarding four similar cases. Immediately, the security forces targeted the restaurant, and it was found to be operating without a license, leading to the arrest of its owner and the closure of the establishment.
At the same time, the executive and regulatory authorities in Alexandria conducted extensive campaigns on the restaurant and its three branches, in cooperation with the Health Directorate, the Supply Directorate, and the Food Safety Authority. Inspection committees reported serious violations of health and food safety requirements, including poor hygiene standards, the presence of insects in food preparation areas, non-compliance with storage and handling regulations, in addition to the deterioration of the tools and equipment used.
The relevant authorities collected samples of food and ingredients used inside the restaurant to send them to specialized laboratories for necessary analyses, while a committee from preventive medicine and food monitoring was formed to follow up on the situation and conduct investigations and inspections. The Alexandria Governorate confirmed that laboratory analyses are still ongoing to accurately determine the source of contamination, and subsequent actions will be based on the final results.
The governorate indicated that the health condition of the injured individuals has shown significant improvement, as several of them left the hospitals after receiving medical care, while the remaining cases remained under medical observation in stable health until full recovery.
