The World Meteorological Organization has warned of the increasing frequency of extreme heatwaves as the El Niño phenomenon intensifies, emphasizing the need to enhance investments and early warning systems to protect populations from the impacts of rising temperatures.
The organization's Secretary-General, Celeste Saulo, stated at the opening of the first global heat forum in Bangkok that record temperatures are threatening human health, infrastructure, and agriculture, stressing the importance of early preparedness to face these risks.
The organization clarified that expanding health-related early warning systems could protect 1.5 billion people and prevent about 100,000 deaths annually.
The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, urged cities to adopt plans to combat extreme heat by 2030.
