The tranquility of the early morning hours disappeared on "Druzhba" Street in the city of Novomoskovsk, the fourth city in the Tula region of Russia, with the sound of an explosion that turned it into a scene of an incident that raised many questions. A civilian Hyundai car was reduced to rubble in moments after it was targeted by an explosive device carefully placed under the driver's seat, ending the life of a controversial figure who combined military and educational work.
The victim was Roman Seromyatnikov, a name that had long echoed in various backrooms. While local newspapers and educational institutions mourned him as a teacher and educator of generations responsible for teaching security and defense subjects in local colleges, security files presented a completely different face of this man.
Seromyatnikov had previously worked for two decades as a psychologist and personnel officer inside the prisons of the Tula region under the Federal Penitentiary Service, but in 2023 he decided to remove his administrative uniform and don the military uniform again, signing a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense to engage in the ongoing battles in Ukraine. He served there within the ranks of the 106th Airborne Division, participating in the fronts of Dvivedivka and the defenses of Kursk, before returning to his city in late 2024, affected by injuries that required treatment.
However, the return home was not peaceful, as upon his return he became involved in veterans' organizations and began to take on the role of an educational guide, giving "courage lessons" to school students and youth, talking about his experiences in Chechnya and Ukraine, relying on a network of graduates who had preceded him to the battlefronts.
On the other side of the border, his name was not absent from the notebooks of Ukrainian investigators. The prosecutor general in Kyiv had explicitly accused him of involvement in harsh practices and torture of more than 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war inside one of the reformatories in Tula during 2022, including the use of harsh tools and electric shocks via field communication devices. Despite the absence of independent confirmations for that period, the specter of the past continued to haunt him until the last moment.
As Russian security agencies continue to comb the site and investigate the circumstances of the explosion, which is believed to have been professionally orchestrated via an explosive device, Seromyatnikov's name remains a title for a complex story intertwining the threads of wars, education, and unresolved regional calculations.
