Boeing has revealed a new issue with its 737 Max aircraft that could double the landing burden on pilots, placing its latest models under increased scrutiny before they enter service.
The issue pertains to a specific scenario that may prevent pilots from accessing the autopilot system when aborting a landing attempt; this forces the aircraft to operate at a lower level of automation to control the pitch angle, increasing the effort required compared to the standard situation.
The company explained that the problem stems from a software glitch in the navigation system, confirming that it informed all operators of the model about it last month and provided them with additional guidance to enhance safe operating procedures. Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced the formation of a review committee to assess whether the glitch poses a safety risk. If proven, the certification process for the 737 Max 10 could be delayed, and the entry of the Max 7 into service may become more complicated despite having recently received approval.
This development comes at a time when Boeing is striving to regain market confidence after a series of technical and regulatory challenges faced by the Max family, making any new issue closely monitored by both regulators and airlines alike.
