The approach of Typhoon "Dojan" to the Pacific coast of Japan has caused the cancellation of 275 flights and the suspension of train services, amid warnings of heavy rain, strong winds, and increasing risks of flooding and landslides.
All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) announced the cancellation of at least 275 flights today (Monday), including 260 domestic flights and 15 international flights, with expectations of continued disruptions in air travel as the typhoon approaches the Tokyo metropolitan area.
This coincided with widespread disruption in transportation, as railway companies suspended services on several lines in Tokyo and the surrounding areas, while airlines and train companies urged travelers to check for updates on flights and services before heading to airports and stations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of intensifying rain and winds as the typhoon approaches the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo, indicating the possibility of recording unprecedented rainfall amounts in some areas, after rainfall in parts of the Izu Islands and the Pacific coast exceeded 300 millimeters since Saturday.
Concerns are growing about the formation of what is known as "linear rain belts," which are narrow bands of rainy clouds that can linger over the same area for hours and lead to significant water accumulation in a short period, increasing the risks of flash floods and landslides.
Weather forecasts indicated that total rainfall by Tuesday could exceed the usual average for the entire month of September in some areas, while parts of the Kanto region and its southern areas face increasing risks of lowland flooding, rising river levels, and mudslides.
The wind speed accompanying the typhoon reached about 144 kilometers per hour as it approached the Tokyo area, while the meteorological agency predicted worsening weather conditions in the coming hours as the center of the typhoon nears the urban area.
The impacts of the typhoon were not limited to the transportation sector, as power was cut off to more than 9,000 households in areas near Tokyo, while the weather conditions prompted authorities to issue landslide warnings in Tokyo and the prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka.
The effects of the typhoon also extended to sports and cultural events, as equestrian competitions in the Asian Games held in Aichi Prefecture were postponed to Tuesday due to bad weather. Additionally, the current edition of the Tokyo Game Show was closed early on its final day, and other sports and music events in Chiba Prefecture were canceled.
Typhoon "Dojan," classified as a strong typhoon, comes at a time when Japan is experiencing the peak of the summer and autumn typhoon season, as the period from late summer to early autumn represents an active season for tropical storms in the western Pacific. The approach of typhoons to densely populated areas increases the risks of transportation disruptions and service outages, alongside flooding and landslides.
