The number of arrests of undocumented migrants in the United States reached a new record during July, surpassing 51,000 individuals, marking a significant escalation in President Donald Trump's administration's campaign against illegal immigration.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency arrested approximately 51,000 migrants during July, exceeding the previous record set in June, which was around 43,000 arrests.
According to federal sources who spoke to Fox News, the average number of arrests during July was about 1,645 per day, while reports indicated that the tally for some days reached around 3,000 arrests, indicating the expanding scope of operations carried out by U.S. authorities.
Homeland Security Secretary Mark Morgan stated in a statement that the department continues to carry out what he described as President Trump's mandate from the American people to deport migrants who are illegally present, noting that the deportation operations last week included individuals accused or convicted of murder, drug trafficking, and theft.
Morgan confirmed that the U.S. administration will continue its operations, considering that the increased pace of deportations has contributed to a decline in crime rates across the country, pledging to continue the campaign until what he described as complete security is achieved.
Conversely, the significant increase in the number of arrests has raised questions about the nature of the targeted individuals and the extent to which the arrests are related to criminal offenses.
Statistics published by the nonprofit site "Stateline" showed that less than one-third of the detained migrants had criminal convictions as of early July, sparking debate over the broadening scope of immigration enforcement operations, which are not limited to individuals with criminal records.
The American campaign increasingly includes individuals whose visas have expired, while authorities use traffic stops and field inspections as key tools to reach migrants who can be detained for deportation procedures.
Operations have also extended to airports, with the Department of Homeland Security revealing that between 20 and 40 migrants were detained daily at airports during July, as immigration enforcement agents intensified their presence near boarding gates and airline ticket counters.
These operations included airports in cities such as San Francisco, Miami, and Kansas City, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, at a time when airports have become one of the primary points targeted by U.S. authorities to verify the legal status of migrants.
The rise in arrests coincided with increasing controversy over the methods used in the campaign, especially after the deaths of a Mexican migrant and a Colombian migrant during traffic stops within less than a week.
The Department of Homeland Security justified the use of force in those incidents based on considerations of self-defense and public safety, while the incidents raised criticisms regarding the nature of the arrests and the conditions under which they are carried out.
These developments come as the Trump administration tightens its immigration policies since returning to the White House, prioritizing increased arrests and deportations and intensifying immigration enforcement measures across the United States.
