قاتل ذكي يحسب خطواته، أم مجرم مرتبك حفر قبره بيده؟ في سيناريو أقرب لأفلام الإثارة والغموض، قادت مكالمة هاتفية أجراها هارب بريطاني مع صحيفة شهيرة، الأجهزة الأمنية إلى تحديد موقعه والإيقاع به في الإكوادور، بعد أن ظن أن تزييف «حجة غياب» كروية كفيل بإبعاده عن حبل المشنقة.
المتهم، ويُدعى ماثيو آشلي فوستر سميث (46 عاماً)، واجه اتهامات ثقيلة من السلطات الكولومبية بإنهاء حياة امرأة تُدعى «ناتاليا فيلالبا» (36 عاماً) بدم بارد، ثم حشر جثتها داخل حقيبة سفر في شقة ببوغوتا، ليفر بعدها عبر الحدود ظاناً أن الجريمة الكاملة قد تحققت.
حيلة لم تكتمل
المثير في القضية أن المتهم وقبل يوم واحد من اعتقاله، اتصل بجريدة «ذا صن» البريطانية للدفاع عن نفسه ونفي التهمة، محاولاً ربط توقيت الجريمة بمباراة منتخب إنجلترا في بطولة كأس العالم. وقال للصحيفة: «لم أكن أنا الفاعل بالتأكيد؛ في ذلك الوقت كنت جالساً في حانة إيرلندية أتابع مباراة إنجلترا ضد كرواتيا عبر شاشة ضخمة. وبعد صافرة النهاية، توجهت إلى مركز تجاري وتناولت الآيس كريم ثم عدت مجدداً لمتابعة بقية مباريات اليوم».
لكن محاولته الحثيثة لتبرئة نفسه تحولت إلى فخ؛ إذ كشفت مصادر صحفية أن السلطات الأمنية تمكنت من تحديد موقعه الجغرافي وتتبع تحركاته بدقة عبر المكالمات التي أجراها مع القسم الإخباري للصحيفة، خصوصاً مع ورود مخاوف من محاولته حجز تذكرة طيران والهروب باتجاه أوروبا.
سيناريو الجريمة
بحسب ما نشره مكتب المدعي العام الكولومبي عبر حسابه الرسمي على منصة «إكس»، فإن التحقيقات تشير إلى أن فوستر سميث اعتدى بالضرب المبرح على الضحية حتى فارقت الحياة، ثم عمد إلى إخفاء جثتها داخل حقيبة سفر تمهيداً للتخلص من معالم الجريمة، قبل أن يبدأ رحلة فراره عبر الحدود التي انتهت بقبضة العدالة في الإكوادور.

The accused, named Matthew Ashley Foster Smith (46 years old), faced serious charges from Colombian authorities for cold-bloodedly ending the life of a woman named "Natalia Villalba" (36 years old), then stuffing her body into a suitcase in an apartment in Bogotá, before fleeing across the border, thinking that the perfect crime had been committed.
An incomplete ruse
What’s intriguing about the case is that the accused, just one day before his arrest, contacted the British newspaper "The Sun" to defend himself and deny the accusation, attempting to link the timing of the crime to an England national team match in the World Cup. He told the newspaper: "I was definitely not the perpetrator; at that time, I was sitting in an Irish pub watching the England vs. Croatia match on a big screen. After the final whistle, I went to a shopping center, had ice cream, and then returned to watch the rest of the matches of the day."
However, his earnest attempt to clear himself turned into a trap; sources revealed that security authorities managed to pinpoint his geographical location and track his movements accurately through the calls he made to the newspaper's news department, especially with concerns arising about his attempt to book a flight ticket and escape towards Europe.
The crime scenario
According to what was published by the Colombian Attorney General's Office via its official account on the "X" platform, investigations indicate that Foster Smith brutally assaulted the victim until she passed away, then concealed her body inside a suitcase in preparation for disposing of the crime's traces, before beginning his escape across the border, which ended with the grip of justice in Ecuador.
