أدت تساقط الثلوج الكثيفة إلى إغلاق مئات المدارس وتعطيل شديد في حركة السفر عبر أجزاء واسعة من شمال اسكتلندا، مع استمرار تحذيرات جوية برتقالية (أمبر) حتى الساعة 10:00 صباحاً اليوم (الإثنين)، بعد أيام من الظروف المتجمدة.
ثلوج متحركة وجليد
وأدى تراكم الثلوج المتحركة والجليد إلى جعل السفر براً وبحراً وجواً مستحيلاً في مناطق عدة من البر الرئيسي، بما في ذلك أبردين، أنجوس، أبردينشاير، موراي، والمرتفعات (هاي لاندز)، إضافة إلى جزر أوركني وشيتلاند التي تأثرت بشدة.
وحذر مكتب الأرصاد الجوية في اسكتلندا من تساقط إضافي يراوح بين 5 - 10 سم من الثلج على نطاق واسع في الشمال الشرقي والمرتفعات والجزر الشمالية، مع إمكانية وصول التراكم إلى 20-30 سم في بعض الأماكن على البر الرئيسي.
إجراءات لعودة حركة المرور
وفي مواجهة هذه الظروف، نشرت شاحنات رش الملح بكثافة عبر البلاد لمعالجة الطرق، مع عودة الآلاف إلى العمل والمدارس بعد عطلة عيد الميلاد، فيما أعلنت شركة «بير اسكتلندا» نشر أسطولها الكامل المكون من 115 مركبة في الشمال الغربي والجنوب الشرقي.
وقال يوان سكوت من وحدة الشمال الغربي في الشركة: "نبذل قصارى جهدنا للحفاظ على الطرق سالكة رغم الظروف الجوية بالغة الصعوبة ونعمل بالتعاون الوثيق مع الشركاء، وأسطول الشتاء لدينا منتشر بالكامل لمعالجة الطرق الرئيسية في الشمال الغربي"، وأضاف أن التحذير الأصفر سيستمر حتى ليلة الثلاثاء حتى بعد رفع التحذير البرتقالي.
كما أكدت شركة «أمي»، المسؤولة عن الشمال الشرقي، عملها بطاقة قصوى للحفاظ على حركة المرور.
إغلاق المدارس في اسكتلندا
وفي أبردينشاير، أغلقت جميع المدارس اليوم، بينما تأخر افتتاح المدارس في أبردين حتى الساعة 11:00 على الأقل.
أما في موراي، فقد أعلنت أكثر من 60 مدرسة وحضانة إغلاقها، وكذلك المدارس والحضانات في شيتلاند وأوركني حتى إشعار آخر.
إلغاء رحلات جوية
وعلى صعيد النقل الجوي، بقي مطار أبردين مفتوحاً لكن تم إلغاء رحلات إلى أمستردام ودبلن ولندن هيثرو، أما مطار سومبورغ في شيتلاند وكيركوال في أوركني، فسيظلان مغلقين.
أما السكك الحديدية، فقد حذرت شركة سكوتريل من ضرورة فحص الخطوط في ضوء النهار، مما قد يؤخر بعض الخدمات حتى مساء الإثنين، وتأثرت خطوط بين أبردين ودندي، أبردين وإينفيرنيس، وإينفيرنيس إلى كايل أوف لوخالش/ويك.
وأوضحت شبكة ريل أن القطارات لا يمكن تشغيلها بأمان في ثلوج تزيد عن 30 سم إلا إذا كانت مزودة بمحاريث ثلجية.
The heavy snowfall has led to the closure of hundreds of schools and severe disruption to travel across large parts of northern Scotland, with orange weather warnings in place until 10:00 AM today (Monday), following days of freezing conditions.
Moving Snow and Ice
The accumulation of moving snow and ice has made travel by road, sea, and air impossible in several areas of the mainland, including Aberdeen, Angus, Aberdeenshire, Moray, and the Highlands, as well as the Orkney and Shetland Islands, which have been severely affected.
The Scottish Meteorological Office has warned of additional snowfall ranging from 5 to 10 cm widely in the northeast, the Highlands, and the northern islands, with accumulations potentially reaching 20-30 cm in some areas on the mainland.
Measures for Resuming Traffic
In the face of these conditions, salt-spreading trucks have been deployed extensively across the country to treat the roads, as thousands return to work and schools after the Christmas holiday, while "Bear Scotland" announced the deployment of its full fleet of 115 vehicles in the northwest and southeast.
Yuan Scott from the northwest unit of the company said, "We are doing our utmost to keep the roads clear despite the extremely difficult weather conditions, and we are working closely with partners. Our winter fleet is fully deployed to treat the main roads in the northwest," adding that the yellow warning will continue until Tuesday night even after the orange warning is lifted.
The company "Amey," responsible for the northeast, also confirmed that it is operating at full capacity to maintain traffic flow.
School Closures in Scotland
In Aberdeenshire, all schools were closed today, while the opening of schools in Aberdeen was delayed until at least 11:00 AM.
In Moray, more than 60 schools and nurseries announced their closure, as well as schools and nurseries in Shetland and Orkney until further notice.
Flight Cancellations
In terms of air transport, Aberdeen Airport remained open but flights to Amsterdam, Dublin, and London Heathrow were canceled, while Sumburgh Airport in Shetland and Kirkwall in Orkney will remain closed.
As for rail services, ScotRail warned that lines need to be inspected in daylight, which may delay some services until Monday evening, affecting routes between Aberdeen and Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness, and Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh/Wee.
Rail Network explained that trains cannot be operated safely in snow exceeding 30 cm unless equipped with snowplows.
