تحوّلت أعمال ترميم داخل برج تاريخي في قلب العاصمة الإيطالية روما إلى مأساة، مساء أمس (الإثنين)، بعدما انهار جزء من المبنى العائد للقرون الوسطى، وأسفر عن وفاة أحد العمال بعد ساعات طويلة من محاولات الإنقاذ.
وأفادت فرق الإطفاء الإيطالية أن العامل الإيطالي كان محاصراً تحت الركام داخل برج «توري دي كوينتي» في حي مونتي، إذ استمرت العملية ساعاتٍ وسط صعوبة بالغة في الوصول إليه؛ بسبب الانهيارات المتتالية. وتمكن رجال الإنقاذ في نهاية المطاف من إخراجه، لكنه فارق الحياة متأثراً بإصاباته قبل وصوله إلى المستشفى.
وقالت رئيسة الوزراء الإيطالية جورجا ميلوني في بيان إن الحكومة «تلقت ببالغ الأسى نبأ وفاة العامل أوكاي سترونتشي أثناء أداء مهماته»، مؤكدة تضامنها مع أسرته وزملائه.
وأوضح محافظ روما روبرتو جياليبيني أن العامل ظل على تواصل مع رجال الإنقاذ خلال الساعات الأولى من العملية، مشيراً إلى أن «التحدي الأكبر كان في خطورة الموقع واستمرار تساقط الركام أثناء عمليات الحفر».
ويُعد برج «توري دي كوينتي» من أبرز المعالم التاريخية في العاصمة الإيطالية،إذ يعود بناؤه إلى القرن الثالث عشر، وتعرض عبر تاريخه لسلسلة من الزلازل والانهيارات الجزئية، قبل أن تشهد أعمال ترميمه هذه الحادثة المأساوية التي أعادت الجدل حول معايير السلامة في المباني الأثرية القديمة.
The restoration work inside a historic tower in the heart of the Italian capital, Rome, turned into a tragedy last night (Monday) after part of the medieval building collapsed, resulting in the death of a worker after long hours of rescue attempts.
Italian firefighting teams reported that the Italian worker was trapped under the rubble inside the "Torre dei Quinti" tower in the Monti district, as the operation lasted for hours amid extreme difficulty in reaching him due to ongoing collapses. Rescuers eventually managed to pull him out, but he succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated in a statement that the government "received with deep sorrow the news of the death of worker Okai Stronci while performing his duties," expressing her solidarity with his family and colleagues.
Rome's governor, Roberto Gualtieri, explained that the worker remained in contact with rescuers during the early hours of the operation, noting that "the biggest challenge was the danger of the site and the continuous falling debris during the excavation efforts."
The "Torre dei Quinti" tower is one of the most prominent historical landmarks in the Italian capital, dating back to the 13th century. Throughout its history, it has experienced a series of earthquakes and partial collapses, before this tragic incident during its restoration reignited the debate over safety standards in ancient heritage buildings.
