قال المتحدث باسم خفر السواحل الأمريكية، جوناثان ليندبرج، إن طائرة هليكوبتر تحطمت فوق بارجة في نهر مسيسبي، الخميس، ما أسفر عن مقتل راكبين كانا على متن الطائرة.
وأضاف أن حركة النقل النهري توقفت بالقرب من مدينة ألتون في ولاية إلينوي.
وأوضح أن النيران اشتعلت في البارجة التي لم يكن على متنها أي فرد، وأن رجال الإطفاء نجحوا في إخماد الحريق.
وأشار إلى أن النهر أُغلق في المسافة بين الميلين 199 و201، بينما بدأ المسؤولون التحقيق في أسباب الحادثة والتأكد من عدم وجود حطام في النهر.
وقال ليندبرج إن موعد استئناف الحركة بالنهر غير معروف حتى الآن.
وقالت وسائل إعلام أمريكية، نقلًا عن جنود دورية الطرق السريعة، إن المروحية كانت تحمل عمالًا كانوا يحاولون العمل على خطوط الكهرباء بالقرب من علامات تحذير الطيران، وهي الكرات البرتقالية على خطوط الكهرباء.
وأفادت التقارير أن الطائرة اصطدمت بسلك كهرباء وسقطت في النهر. وحاولت المروحية الهبوط على الصندل قبل أن تشتعل فيها النيران.
ويُعد نهر مسيسبي ممرًا رئيسيًا للسفن الناقلة للغلال والحبوب وغيرها من السلع.
U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Jonathan Lindberg stated that a helicopter crashed onto a barge in the Mississippi River on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of two passengers on board the helicopter.
He added that river traffic was halted near the city of Alton in Illinois.
He clarified that the barge, which had no one on board, caught fire, and firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze.
He noted that the river was closed between mile markers 199 and 201, while officials began investigating the cause of the incident and ensuring there was no debris in the river.
Lindberg said that the timeline for resuming river traffic is currently unknown.
U.S. media outlets, citing highway patrol officers, reported that the helicopter was carrying workers who were attempting to work on power lines near aviation warning markers, which are the orange balls on the power lines.
Reports indicated that the helicopter struck a power line and fell into the river. The helicopter attempted to land on the barge before catching fire.
The Mississippi River is a major thoroughfare for vessels transporting grains, cereals, and other goods.
