A massive wedding held in Marsa Matrouh Governorate has sparked widespread controversy on social media platforms, as it quickly became the talk of Egyptians and the Arab world due to its unprecedented scale and costs exceeding half a billion Egyptian pounds, in addition to the extravagant gifts that included cars from brands like (Porsche) and (Lamborghini).
According to the website (Telegraph Egypt), the event, which took place over two days on September 23 and 24 across an area of 55 acres, belongs to Omar Abdulrahman Al-Omairi, known by the title (Sultan). He is the son of the (Al-Omairat) tribe or (Ait Omaira), one of the ancient Arab tribes residing in the city of Al-Nagila in Matrouh.
Despite the grandeur of the celebration, the event had a purely Islamic character that reflects the traditions of the Egyptian desert, as it was free of mixing, featured the attendance of prominent Quran reciters, and saw guests lining up to perform prayers with each call to prayer, along with the distribution of five or six Umrah trips, including one designated for the elderly.
Social media platforms circulated clips showing the scale of the feasts that were served during the celebration, where about 90 calves, 120 sheep, and 30 camels were slaughtered, in addition to luxurious gifts for the groom, including (Porsche) and (Lamborghini) cars. While some viewed the celebration's displays as excessive, the people of Matrouh defended it, asserting that what took place reflects the traditions of Arab tribes known for their generosity.
Tribal members also clarified that the title (Sultan) is not related to authority or influence as some might think, but is a title given to the groom on his wedding night among Arab tribes, especially in Matrouh, and has no connection to financial means.
