في واقعة أثارت الجدل والغضب، أقدم رجل أمريكي على تزوير اختبار الحمض النووي (DNA) في محاولة يائسة للتهرب من دفع نفقة طفله التي بلغت قيمتها 125 ألف دولار، قبل أن تفضحه الحقيقة في نهاية المطاف وتُودعه السجن.
القصة بدأت عام 2022، حين أنجبت تشيلسي ميلار طفلها «لوي»، لتُفاجأ بعد 3 أيام بإنكار والده شيلدون براون أبوّته للطفل ومطالبته بإجراء فحص الحمض النووي. ورغم ثقتها التامة بأن براون هو الأب البيولوجي إلا أن نتائج الفحص جاءت صادمة وسلبية، ما أدى إلى إغلاق قضية النفقة من قِبل الجهات المختصة.
لكن تشيلسي لم تقتنع. وبدافع الأمومة والشك، أقنعت والدة براون بإجراء فحص DNA خاص في مختبر مستقل، لتظهر النتيجة المفاجئة: الطفل هو حفيدها البيولوجي. وهنا بدأت خيوط التزوير تتكشف.
تبين لاحقاً أن براون استعان بعمته لتوصيله إلى فني مختبر يُدعى روبرت باتيل، الذي ساعده على تزوير العينة باستخدام لعاب غير مطابق، وتوقيع طبيب مزيف، بل استعمل ختماً رسمياً لإضفاء المصداقية على الفحص المزور. إلا أن سابقة باتيل الجنائية في قضية سرقة سابقة قادته إلى الانكشاف سريعاً.
عندما تطابق الحمض النووي مع باتيل بدلاً من براون اكتملت فصول الجريمة. وأمام الأدلة اعترف كلاهما بالتآمر لارتكاب الاحتيال. ليُحكم على براون بالسجن 50 أسبوعاً، وعلى باتيل بالسجن 33 أسبوعاً.
خاضت تشيلسي معركة قانونية مريرة لإثبات أمر بديهي، وعلّقت بغضب قائلة: «مستوى عدم الاحترافية وانتهاك الثقة في هذه القضية غير مقبول على الإطلاق. من حق الناس أن يشعروا بالأمان حين يتعلق الأمر بالرعاية والخدمات الطبية، خصوصاً في قضايا حساسة كهذه».
هكذا تحولت محاولة براون للهروب من مسؤولياته إلى فضيحة علنية وسجل جنائي، بينما بقيت تشيلسي مثالاً لصمود الأمهات في وجه التحايل والظلم.

The story began in 2022, when Chelsea Millar gave birth to her child "Loui," only to be shocked three days later by the denial of the child's father Sheldon Brown of his paternity and his demand for a DNA test. Despite her complete confidence that Brown was the biological father, the test results were shocking and negative, leading to the closure of the child support case by the relevant authorities.
However, Chelsea was not convinced. Driven by motherhood and doubt, she persuaded Brown's mother to conduct a special DNA test in an independent lab, which revealed the surprising result: the child is her biological grandchild. It was here that the threads of the forgery began to unravel.
It later turned out that Brown had enlisted his aunt to connect him with a lab technician named Robert Patel, who helped him forge the sample using non-matching saliva, a fake doctor's signature, and even used an official seal to lend credibility to the forged test. However, Patel's criminal history in a previous theft case led to his quick exposure.
When the DNA matched Patel instead of Brown, the chapters of the crime were complete. Faced with the evidence, both confessed to conspiring to commit fraud. Brown was sentenced to 50 weeks in prison, while Patel received a 33 week prison sentence.
Chelsea fought a bitter legal battle to prove an obvious matter, and she angrily remarked: “The level of unprofessionalism and breach of trust in this case is absolutely unacceptable. People have the right to feel safe when it comes to care and medical services, especially in sensitive cases like this”.
Thus, Brown's attempt to escape his responsibilities turned into a public scandal and a criminal record, while Chelsea remained a symbol of mothers' resilience in the face of deception and injustice.
