تصاعدت المخاوف البيئية في محافظة النجف بالعراق، بعد ظهور أعداد كبيرة من الأسماك النافقة على ضفاف هور بن نجم، في مشهد أثار القلق بين الأهالي والسلطات على حد سواء.
وقال مدير بيئة النجف، جمال عبد زيد، في تصريحات صحفية، إن دائرته تلقت بلاغات متعددة حول هذه الظاهرة، ما استدعى تشكيل فريق ميداني مختص بالتنسيق مع الجهات المعنية للكشف عن الأسباب الحقيقية وراء هذه الكارثة.
وأشار عبد زيد إلى أن التحقيقات ما تزال في مراحلها الأولية، لافتاً إلى وجود عدة عوامل محتملة، أبرزها تراجع منسوب المياه وجفاف الجداول المتفرعة عن الهور، وهي الجداول التي تمثل نهايات الأنهار وتشهد خلال هذا الموسم انخفاضاً حاداً في المياه وركوداً شديداً، الأمر الذي يؤدي إلى نقص الأكسجين المذاب الضروري لبقاء الأسماك.
ولم يستبعد المسؤول فرضية العبث البشري، موضحاً أن بعض الصيادين قد يلجأون إلى وسائل صيد غير قانونية، مثل الصعق الكهربائي أو استخدام مواد سامة، وهي أساليب تلحق أضراراً جسيمة بالحياة المائية وتخلّ بالتوازن البيئي.
يأتي ذلك في وقت تشهد البلاد موجة حر قاسية، إذ أعلنت هيئة الأنواء الجوية بالعراق وصول درجات الحرارة إلى 38 درجة مئوية في بعض المناطق، فضلاً عن تصاعد الغبار، ما يزيد من حدة تأثيرات التغير المناخي على الموارد المائية والنظم البيئية.
Environmental concerns have escalated in Najaf Governorate, Iraq, following the appearance of large numbers of dead fish along the banks of the Hawr Ben Najm, a scene that has raised alarm among both residents and authorities alike.
The Director of the Najaf Environment, Jamal Abdul Zaid, stated in press remarks that his department has received multiple reports regarding this phenomenon, prompting the formation of a specialized field team in coordination with the relevant authorities to uncover the true causes behind this disaster.
Abdul Zaid pointed out that investigations are still in their initial stages, noting the presence of several potential factors, the most prominent of which is the decline in water levels and the drying up of the streams branching from the marsh, which represent the ends of rivers and are experiencing a sharp decrease in water and severe stagnation this season, leading to a deficiency in dissolved oxygen essential for the survival of fish.
The official did not rule out the possibility of human interference, explaining that some fishermen may resort to illegal fishing methods, such as electric shock or the use of toxic substances, which cause severe damage to aquatic life and disrupt the ecological balance.
This comes at a time when the country is experiencing a severe heatwave, as the Iraqi Meteorological Authority announced that temperatures have reached 38 degrees Celsius in some areas, in addition to rising dust, which exacerbates the impacts of climate change on water resources and ecosystems.
