Real Madrid has confirmed its commitment to granting its players the freedom to express their opinions, following the controversy surrounding its stars Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior, after they did not clearly show a message of solidarity with the residents of Ceuta before the match against Elche in La Liga.
Before the match held at the "La Cerámica" stadium (on Tuesday), players from both teams wore shirts bearing the phrase "We are all Caballas," in reference to the residents of Ceuta.
As the players entered the pitch, Mbappé and Vinícius raised the shirts to chest level, which prevented the phrase from being clearly visible, before completely removing them after leaving the tunnel leading to the field. Their teammate Ibrahima Konaté simply held the shirt in his hands.
A Real Madrid official explained that the club agreed to Elche's request to participate in the initiative, but at the same time confirmed that the decision to wear the shirt and display the message or not participate was left to each player, based on the club's respect for diverse opinions and freedom of choice.
This comes amid a widespread show of solidarity with the residents of Ceuta in Spain over the past few weeks, following the illegal entry of more than 70,000 people from Morocco into the city last July.
Real Madrid had organized a fan event during its match against Inter Milan in the Champions League last week to support Ceuta, which included fans raising banners bearing the city's flag.
In contrast, the Valencia Businessmen's Association participated in the initiative to wear the shirts, while Barcelona chose not to participate during its match against Levante last Sunday.
Reactions extended to Moroccan international Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, who faced offensive comments on social media after wearing the shirt during the Real Betis match against Villarreal (on Monday).
Ezzalzouli confirmed in a statement that he does not intend to apologize for his stance, explaining that wearing the shirt was an expression of support for a local community and a social issue, and according to him, it carries no political implications.
