The Portuguese coach Pedro Martins, of the Qatari Al-Gharafa football team, confirmed that his team tried to appear competitive against Al-Hilal and to achieve a positive result, noting that the technical differences and the quality of the Saudi players made the task difficult, leading to the team losing 2-1 in the opening of their encounters in the AFC Champions League.
Martins said during the press conference after the match: "We came to be competitive and to get a positive result. We started the match well and managed to create two chances, but after the penalty, Al-Hilal was able to control the match and manage it the way they wanted."
He added: "The penalty was naive on our part, and with the quality of Al-Hilal's players, it became difficult for us. Nevertheless, we fought to get something from the match, and I cannot blame the players; they competed against one of the best teams in the tournament."
The Portuguese coach also addressed the two red cards during the match, saying: "It is true that the red cards were for both teams, but it undoubtedly affected us, and there are also some issues related to our team's readiness in the past period."
Martins clarified that the technical differences between the two teams had an impact on the course of the match, adding: "The technical differences are significant between our team and Al-Hilal, and the substitutions I made were appropriate. I also believe that we had a penalty that the referee did not award."
He concluded his remarks by praising Al-Hilal, saying: "Al-Hilal is one of the best teams in the tournament, and they will fight to achieve the title."
