French football witnessed the debut of a new technology for the first time, as the Video Assistant Referee Support System (FVS) was used during the match between Aubagne and Air-Bel Thionville, in the French third division league. The system was implemented when the Thionville coach requested a review of a play that he believed warranted a red card.
After reviewing the situation, the coach's objection was accepted, and the decision was made in favor of his team, in a move that reflects the new role that coaching staff can play in reviewing certain refereeing decisions.
The FVS system differs from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, as it allows coaches to request reviews of a limited number of situations during the match, rather than the review being initiated by the video room, as is the case with the traditional VAR system.
