وفي سياق التحقيقات، أشارت الشرطة الإيطالية إلى أن الجاني البالغ من العمر 73 عاماً وُضع رهن الإقامة الجبرية، في انتظار استكمال محاكمته بمجموعة من التهم الثقيلة، تشمل الاعتداء، والتسبب في إصابات خطيرة، والشروع في القتل على خلفية نزاع مروري.
وتعود جذور الأزمة بحسب المعطيات الأولية، إلى استيائ السائق من قيام مجموعة مكونة من ستة دراجين باعتلاء مساحة من الطريق الواقع بين بلدتي "لانزو تورينيزي" و"كواسولو". وعقب إطلاقه لمنبه السيارة بغضب لتجاوزهم، بادله الدراجون إشارات احتجاجية، وهو ما أشعل فتيل التوتر بين الطرفين.
ولم يتوقف الأمر عند هذا الحد؛ إذ توقف السائق فجأة ليعود بسيارته إلى الخلف داهساً أربعة منهم، قبل أن يكرر فعلته ويصدمهم للمرة الثانية. وبينما سارع بقية الدراجين بتدوين رقم لوحة المركبة، بادر السائق بتسليم نفسه لاحقاً للسلطات الأمنية.
