أجبرت النيران المشتعلة في مقاطعة كولومبيا البريطانية غربي كندا السلطات على إصدار أوامر فورية بإجلاء أكثر من 20 ألف شخص، إثر اقتراب حرائق الغابات من المناطق السكنية غرب بحيرة أوكاناجان.
شملت موجة النزوح القسري هذه جميع سكان بلدة سمرلاند البالغ عددهم نحو 12 ألف نسمة، إلى جانب 8 آلاف آخرين في بلدة بيتش لاند والمناطق المجاورة لها. وعلى إثر ذلك، أعلنت المقاطعة حالة الطوارئ وسط تفشي الحرائق في عدة مناطق بغرب البلاد. ووصف مسؤول في إدارة الطوارئ حريق «بالد رينج» بأنه من أشرس وأسرع حرائق الغابات انتشاراً في تاريخ المنطقة.
وفي مؤتمر صحفي عقده بالمناسبة، قال رئيس وزراء المقاطعة ديفيد إيبي: «فُقدت منازل ودُمرت ممتلكات، وهناك أشخاص حاصرتهم النيران بفعل التغيرات السريعة وهم بحاجة عاجلة للإنقاذ.. الوضع لا يزال شديد التقلب والخطورة».
التهم حريق «بالد رينج»، الذي اندلع مساء الجمعة الماضي، مساحة تقدر بنحو 9500 هكتار بعد أن تضاعفت رقعته خلال ليلة واحدة فقط، زاحفاً لمسافة تقارب 15 كيلومتراً باتجاه سمرلاند. وأكد رئيس بلدية المدينة دوج هولمز، تضرر أعداد كبيرة من المزارع، مشيراً إلى أن فرق الإطفاء ما زالت تواصل جهودها المضنية وسط صعوبة حصر المباني المدمرة بدقة حتى الآن.
تسببت هذه الكارثة في انقطاع التيار الكهربائي عن سمرلاند الواقعة على بعد نحو 45 كيلومتراً من مدينة كيلونا. ويقف نحو 1500 عنصر إطفاء على خطوط المواجهة في مختلف أنحاء المقاطعة التي تواجه طقساً حاراً وجافاً يضاعف من خطر اندلاع بؤر جديدة، وأصدرت السلطات حتى الآن 38 أمر إخلاء و49 تنبيهاً لمواجهة أكثر من 100 حريق نشط.
تأتي هذه التطورات استمراراً لموسم حرائق قاسٍ شهدته عدة مقاطعات كندية كأونتاريو وكيبيك طوال العام الجاري. وبحسب المركز الكندي المشترك بين الوكالات لمواجهة حرائق الغابات، فقد التهمت النيران نحو أربعة ملايين هكتار في عموم البلاد منذ بداية العام.
The raging fires in British Columbia, western Canada, have forced authorities to issue immediate evacuation orders for more than 20,000 people, as wildfires approach residential areas west of Okanagan Lake.
This wave of forced displacement included all residents of the town of Summerland, which has a population of about 12,000, along with another 8,000 in the town of Peachland and surrounding areas. In response, the province declared a state of emergency amid the spread of fires in several regions of the west. An official from the emergency management agency described the "Bald Range" fire as one of the fiercest and fastest-spreading wildfires in the region's history.
In a press conference held on the occasion, the province's Premier David Eby said: "Homes have been lost and properties destroyed, and there are people trapped by the flames due to rapid changes who urgently need rescue... the situation remains highly volatile and dangerous."
The "Bald Range" fire, which broke out last Friday evening, has consumed an estimated area of about 9,500 hectares after its footprint doubled in just one night, creeping nearly 15 kilometers towards Summerland. The city's mayor, Doug Holmes, confirmed that a large number of farms have been affected, noting that firefighting teams are still working tirelessly amid the difficulty of accurately assessing the destroyed buildings so far.
This disaster has caused power outages in Summerland, located about 45 kilometers from the city of Kelowna. Approximately 1,500 firefighters are on the front lines across the province, which is facing hot and dry weather that increases the risk of new flare-ups, and authorities have so far issued 38 evacuation orders and 49 alerts to address more than 100 active fires.
These developments come as a continuation of a harsh fire season experienced by several Canadian provinces such as Ontario and Quebec throughout this year. According to the Canadian inter-agency wildfire response center, fires have consumed about four million hectares across the country since the beginning of the year.
